Because you meet the minimum software requirements on your PC and not on your Mac

No - not if you do not meet the minimum requirements

see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ for set up instructions and minimum requirements for different features

My point is that I can do all this without having to pay for an app on my Windows PC. I was able to download the free icloud program and then turn on photostream. I can do it on XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Why would Apple make it so I have to pay for anything on my iMac but on my Windows Pc have it available for free.

And the answer is because you meet the minimum software requirements on the PC - you do not on the Mac - any system that does not meet the minimum software requirements will have to be updated in order to use any software including PhotoStream

Only Apple knows why the minimum software requirements are what they are

Interesting you are wrong here too - XP is not supported and Vista requires SP2

PC requirements are

To enable iCloud on your Windows PC, first set up iCloud on your other devices, then install the iCloud Control Panel for Windows (Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or Windows 7 required).

So for someone like me who is up to date on my Mac but has XP on my PC I can use PS for free on my Mac but have to pay to upgrade my PC to use it - as I said you have to meet the minimum requirements to use anything including PhotoStream

I have a Windows 7 pc and a Windows 8 laptop.

Both allow mw to use icloud and photo stream with out having to add any extra apps.

I upgraded my imac to mountain lion doing a fresh install and then installed ilife and updated it as far as Apple would update it.

I try to turn on photo stream it is grayed out and says:

Shared Photo Streams allow you to share selected photos with people you choose. This Photo Stream feature requires OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 (or later) and iPhoto 9.4 (or later) or Aperture 3.4 (or later).

It says I have to buy the newer version.

My point is that I do it for free on my Windows computers and have to pay for something on my MAC.

Yes - ONLY so long as you meet the minimum requirements which are well publicised

ANd if you had XP on your PC and current software on you Mac it would be the PC that had to be upgraded

I know you are finding it difficult but it is really simply - there are minimum requirements for all software and if you do not meet them you can not use the software -- Not sure why you continue to post something that EVERYONE KNOWS - if you do not meet the minimum requirements you can't use the package - even at Disneyhland if you are not tall enough you can not ride the ride
