It appears the play/pause setting on my dial is shorting out. It produces a loud click when depressed and the screen goes blank. Ipod must be recharged to work again, but repeats the problem. Can this be fixed?

I have an older ipod classic. When I depress the play/pause, I get a loud pop in the speakers and the screen goes blank. Cannot get the screen back up. Charge it up and it looks good, but it repeats the problem. Sounds to me like that part of the control is shorting out. Can this be fixed or is the unit trash?

It's hard to know for sure whether or not it would be a simple fix. It could be just the clickwheel, but there is also a chance that the problem is with the actual logic board. It would be a risk to try and replace just the clickwheel, but if it turns out to be all that was wrong with the iPod, it would be cheaper than replacing the entire unit.

It want to avoid all that hassle, probably time to move on.
