Do "Empty" memory slots shown in the System Profiler indicate failed memory?

I have 8GB physically installed in the machine.

About this Mac states I have only 6GB.

The System Profiler shows 6GB.

Do "Empty" memory slots shown in the System Profiler indicate failed memory?

It could.

Move the cards around and see if the"empty" slot a certain card.

If it does that could indicate a bad card.

If the "empty" slot remain the same as the cards are cycled through it, that could indicate a bad slot.
