Q: The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.

I have seen many posts/questions about this issue--but most of the "answers" i found for this problem were given in July 2012 which may be dated and are not working for me now.

According to Apple support, these are the steps to fix this problem:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3970?viewlocale=en_US

None of the resolutions have worked:

1. I'm not using a third-party firewall, just the Apple firewall and it's turned off.

2. I've checked my /private/etc/hosts file and there are no entries containing apple.com or verisign.com--only the default entries are listed.

3. I automatically set my date and time and have always had that feature checked.

4. I have one Apple ID associated with my email address and have confirmed that my Apple ID is verified.

Another discussion from someone who also couldn't fix it from the above resolutions suggested deleting/trashing info.plist file from apps folder. I don't have such a file in my apps folder.

Any other suggestions or help?!?! I've been using Facetime often on my Mac and it was working fine until about a week ago.

Oh my gosh, I've had this problem for months too.

Same problem as CA3LE - AN EXTRA LINE BREAK IN HOSTS FILE!
    AGH!

    Much love

Kinda ******** that causes such an issue.  Funny thing is... it was working fine for the longest time after my last edit to the /etc/hosts file.  It's as if some apple update caused the issue to surface.

Oh well... guess whitespace isn't allowed in that file.  Lesson learned, hope this helps others.

toddwest24's post about changing the Date & Time to Automatic and clearing any extra entries in the Hosts file worked for me. I had the problem with both FaceTime and Messages in OS X 10.8.2.

BTW, to edit the Hosts file, you can also open Terminal.app, then type:

    sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

Type your user password when prompted (you must be an administrator). The Hosts file will open. Be very careful. Use the arrow buttons to move the blinking cursor around and backspace to delete the text you want to delete. Then Control-o (letter o) to save your changes, hit Return when prompted, then Control-x to exit. Then quit Terminal.

    Further to my previous message.

    Timesettings are correct,

text in host file is identical to toddwest24's,

    still things do not function!

Could it be some error in p.list?

If so, what is its complete name and where would I find it?

I traveled to London and wanted to use FaceTime from here today. It didn't work from my mbp but it did from my iphone 5; so I followed Todd's steps to the letter on the mbp and it worked!

Thanks guys; I'm new to the forums but they certainly ARE more helpful than the apple suggestions..

I am also having this problem with Facetime. I have my clock doing the automatic thing - I have edited the host file as per toddwest24 (using Terminal as suggested by Property) and I am still getting the dreaded message when I try to log in. I thought I had left all this sort of rubbish behind when I left PC for Mac.

Any ideas as to what to do next?

I did exactly as toddwest24 said and it worked perfectly.  I sure appreciate it.

djnb and steven, you guys find a solution? i have the same problem and none of the fixes on any of the forums seem to fix it. including the one above.

And the worst thing is in applying the fix here:

facetime no longer works (it was just imessage before)

    No, I didn't.

Elsewhere I asked whether the .plist might be the culprit if, indeed, such list would exist. Nobody rose to the bait, however.

Steven, I got tired of all these solutions and ended up doing a reinstall of OSX using my time machine. If that is an option for you give it a go. Fortunately it had only been a day or so trying to solve this so I didn't have to roll back very far.

One other thing to note. Under date and time settings there are TWO tabs.

    1. Date and Time

    2. Time Zone

Apparently the automatically set box needs to be ticked in both (or at least in Time Zone). One of the problems I had was that I could do it in Date and Time but it wouldn't let me do it in Time Zone (I got a message saying location could not be determined...or something similar). The reinstall fixed this.

Might be worth looking into this in case this is also your problem and if it is finding what is causing it (unfortunately i dont know what was causing it on my system)

My time settings are OK, as are my password and the text in the Host file, but still no way, José!

It doesn't worry me too much though, as my iPad offers FaceTime facilities without any ado!

FaceTime and Messages FIXED on a new Mac!  Major New Discovery:

My 2 month old MacBook Pro 15 (MBP 15) on Mac OS 10.8.2 began experiencing this exact FaceTime and Messages problem about one month after the Mac was new. I tried all the above suggested fixes and nothing worked. The only solution I hadn't tried yet was to reinstall the whole operating system. But before resorting to that step, by shear luck I went by our local Apple Store where I happened to meet a senior staffer I've known for a good while and mentioned my problem.

In the course of our conversation, I also happened to mention to him that ever since Apple had replaced the optical drive and logic board (both of which had proved to be defective), my new MBP 15 no longer knew its serial number in the "About This Mac" dialog box, thinking that might be an unavoidable consequence of the logic boardectomy. He chuckled and informed me that my MBP15's serial number should have been written to the new logic board but the repairing tech had apparently forgotten to do it before returning the Mac to me. So I made a Genius Bar appointment for the next day to get the serial number written and I held off doing the OS reinstall in the off chance the two problems might be related.

At the Genius Bar the next day, the tech quickly corrected the oversight and wrote my serial number to my logic board, and once completed, I rebooted my Mac in the store and immediately tested FaceTime and Messages... and eureka, they both now worked!!!

Lesson Learned:  FaceTime and Messages will not work with out the serial number in the "About This Mac" under the Apple. No one on this message board so far nor in the Apple Store has mentioned this fact.
