Q: The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.

I have seen many posts/questions about this issue--but most of the "answers" i found for this problem were given in July 2012 which may be dated and are not working for me now.

According to Apple support, these are the steps to fix this problem:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3970?viewlocale=en_US

None of the resolutions have worked:

1. I'm not using a third-party firewall, just the Apple firewall and it's turned off.

2. I've checked my /private/etc/hosts file and there are no entries containing apple.com or verisign.com--only the default entries are listed.

3. I automatically set my date and time and have always had that feature checked.

4. I have one Apple ID associated with my email address and have confirmed that my Apple ID is verified.

Another discussion from someone who also couldn't fix it from the above resolutions suggested deleting/trashing info.plist file from apps folder. I don't have such a file in my apps folder.

Any other suggestions or help?!?! I've been using Facetime often on my Mac and it was working fine until about a week ago.

Several commenters here on this FaceTime/Messages (FT/M) inop discussion have claimed that the Mac's Date & Time Control Panel's Date & Time tab must be set to "Set date and time automatically" in order for FT/M to work. Seoultrain 75 goes further and posits that not only that but the Time Zone tab "Set time zone automatically using current location" must also be selected for FT/M to work.

While I can't speak to the first claim, this latter claim appears to be INCORRECT. Until my recent FT/M glitch discussed previously which is now fixed, my FT/M apps on my current and previous MacBook Pro 15s have both worked flawlessly despite my never having enabled "Set time zone automatically using current location" in the Date & Time control panel.

As an aside, this Time Zone business is in fact a major factor for me because I often travel to other time zones and I long ago discovered to my horror that if I enabled this feature, all the time entries in my Calendar would be changed to bogus times making Calendar time entries feature all but useless until I manually changed the time zone back to the original time zone. In my view, this is a major bug in the Calendar (previously iCal) that has long persisted at least since Snow Leopard and needs to be fixed but that opinion belongs in another discussion group.

Conclusion: I can unequivocally state that whether you have "Set time zone automatically using current location" selected or not has no bearing on this FaceTime/Messages snafu being discussed here.

    Hi,

I tried toddwest24's solution after encountering exactly the same problem - however at the last stage of your instructions (i.e dragging the edited Host file back into the /etc file) i'm told this cannot be completed because the host file is in use. I had nothing else open at the time...any ideas what might be causing this?

    Thanks,

    Faith

Yes that is the answer for the problem after I restore the default hosts file Facetime log in. I put all the blocked servers after that again and no problem.

Thanks toddwest24... I'm up and running again.

Like others, I made sure the date AND time zone was set to auto update/locate. I checked my firewall settings and still was locked out of FaceTime. I tried the fix above with updating the hosts file, but still no love. Then, I updated and restarted my machine. I'm good to go! Many thanks.

Interesting....I had all the same problems as everyone else in this conversation, I checked my settings and everything, but I didn't change anything, only because it's a new mac book pro I have and I was scared of screwing it up. But for some reason, it fixed itself. My FaceTime works again and I didn't do anything other than restart it…

like a buddy of mine said.......its like a sore butt hole, it fixed itself... lol

Thanks for all the tips people, good luck!

i followed the instructions with no luck.  Then I reread the note from furysound above.  I restarted my iMac and it worked perfectly.  Don't forget to RESTART your computer!!!

Just decided to start using skype instead. It works brillantly with no problems. This stupid server error has been the plague of my existence. I thought "firewall" problems so attempted to remove it from the fire wall and try to relogin. But surprise, facetime dosnt even try connect to the internet when it give this error.

    So using Skype

Messages and Facetime both stopped working on my Retina MBP, about the same time Apple replaced its motherboard (the Nvidia graphics chip went bad).

William McKelvy's tip about serial numbers was spot on - Apple had forgot to set my machine's serial number after the repair. A quick visit to the Genius bar later, my machine now has its old serial number again, and Messages and Facetime are now both working correctly.

    Thanks!

    Chris
