3tb western digital cannot be formatted as such
Disk Utility can only format this drive as 801.57GB. Is there a solution?

Is that a "single 3TB" disk, or 2 x 1.5TB or so?
Any RAID stuff going on?
Which format?
It's a single 3tb drive. It is connected to a firewire enclosure. I also conected it to a USB enclosure. I hae tried just a simple format and also a 1 partition format but in both cases it only shows up as a 800GB drive.
What, you connect it with both FW and USB simultaneously? Maybe you want to decide for one only and leave it there...
And again:

no, I cnnected it with Firewire first and saw the problem. Then, to find out if it was a FW problem, I popped the disk into a USB enclusure and connected it thus. Still the same problem. This was simply a troouble-shouting effore.
Maybe Macs cannot understand HDD larger then 2TB.
No no, OS X can handle volumes up to 8EB, that's about 2.5 million of your drives combined in one... 😀
So, are you using Mac OS Extended? Any encryption?
Single click the drive in Finder. Go to: File > Get Info. What does the info window say the Capacity is?
Is this a bare (OEM) drive you are putting in your own enclosure?
If so how are you sure the enclosure supports a 3tb drive? Many enclosures (especially older ones) will not support 3tb.
I have FW and USB "Toaster" type enclosures. Slot the HDD in and push out. Both are less than 2 years old. I suspected the chips in my FW ecnlosure may be a problem so I tried the USB one. Both have the same problem.
I belive the chipset in both is Oxford spmething or other.
I am using an Imac so this is the only way to use additional drives.
I suspect the enclosures are the problem here. Get the model and serial number off them and go to the manufactures web site to get the specs. If they really do support 3tb drives post back.
good luck
The problem is the bridge chipset in the Firewire enclosure isn't properly/fully supporting 48-bit LBA for the drive.
