Windows 8 and Airport Express

I now have Windows 8 and I cannot connect to my AirPort Express. Do I need new drivers to fix this?

Thanks for the link. I installed this and realized it just installs Airport on my Windows 8 laptop. It did not fix the issue. My wireless netwok still says "Limited" when I am connected to the Airport router. I should have been more specific in my question earlier; I can connect my Windows 8 laptop to the Airport Extreme (not Express like I said originally), I just cant connect to the internet. "Limited" displays on my wireless connection. Any thoughts?

Hi -

Here are the specifics:

Primary Router - Airport Express 802.11n (1st Generation) Version 7.6.4

Connected to a fiber modem over PPPoE

Configured with Airport Utility for Windows 5.6.1

Computer:

Acer AO756 with Broadcom BCM43225 wifi adapter and Windows 8.1 installed

Problem: Computer connects to Airport Express ok but shows Limited Internet Access. Though the computer connects fine to other WiFi routers.

Improvement: Rolled back Broadcomm drivers to 1 year old Windows 8.0 drivers. WiFi is working but had one disconnect with same Limited Internet Access problem.

Thoughts: The problem might be how the Airport Express connects to Windows 8.1 PCs over WiFi.

The driver should not matter as long as the laptop is not set with a static internal address - and make sure that your modem is working properly - Windows 8.1 by default will automatically connect to a properly configured Express by choosing the network and entering the password - if you have changed any settings different from factory settngs then change them back to the original - make sure that your Express is configured as follows:

Internet connection = PPOE - be sure to enter your logon info correctly

Wi-fi Mode = create a wireless network - connected via ethernet

Name your wireless network - use a simple name

Security = WPA2 Personal

Password = 8 characters of your choice - use letters or numbers only - no caps

Router Mode = DHCP and NAT

IPV6 = link local only

Leave eveything else as default

Once it is configured properly, unplug all devices or power them down and then power up starting with the Modem - be sure to remove and replace the battery if present -- wait for it to fully boot - then plug in the Express and wait for a green light - then turn on the laptop - then choose your wireless network and enter the password.

The following are already set (verified) and the Airport Express shows a green light. The Airport works fine with another PC that runs on Windows 7 as well.

It's only the Acer AO756 with Windows 8.1 that isn't working. The AO756 WiFi worked fine with Windows 8.0 and the Airport Express before it was upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Thanks for the update. It sounds like you are correct. The issue is with the 8.1 upgrade. It made changes to anticipate the future. Unfortunately some people have had problems with it. If you haven't tried it already, go to the adapter properties and disable ipv6 connectivity. If your laptop goes into sleep or hibernate mode, I would change it to stay on all the time. Also make sure that wake on LAN is enabled both on the adapter and the laptop setup. Other than that, I don't have any suggestions.

Here is the temporary fix:

Disable WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) on the Advanced tab of the WiFi driver properties window.

Note: After disabling WMM, the Airport Utility won't connect but at least the Internet access works. Just reenable WMM to access Airport Utility and then redisable WMM to get Internet access back.

This worked for me.

Machine - Lenovo Laptop with Windows 8

Airport Express 7.6.4

I set up the Airport Express from the Lenovo Laptop.

Once the Setup is done

Right click under WIFI status to get to

Wireless Network Properties

Under Advanced Settings Tab - Enable FIPS compliance for the network.

This should get your WIFI going on the Windows 8 Machine.
