can i print to an airprint printer that has no connection to a wifi or ethernet connection?
e.g. will the printer be visible to print to through its software or does it have to have a wifi connection?

Hi tnotty,
Both the iPad and the printer must be on the same network, however you can work without a router by using the Wireless Direct feature of the printer, therefore you will need to switch networks in order to print.
Follow the steps below to enable Wireless Direct:
Now from your iPad enter Settings > Wi-Fi and connect to the Wireless direct network.
If you aren't sure about the network name or password follow those steps:

the printer is a hp photosmart 5524.
network settigns look very simple on the lcd panel but i havent tried with the installed driver/tools.
Its slightly more complicated.
We are setting up at an exhibition and will have time limited wifi. (e.g. wep code changes every half hour)
We will be using ipads for demo's and need to print from them to a wifi printer that is permenantly available (e.g. not linked to the time limited wifi).
My plan was to pre setup a wifi network just for the printer using airport express and then use airprint to print to that printer on the different wifi network.
I suppose my question is:
Is it possible to print to a wifi airprint printer on a differnt network than the one that the ipads will be on.

Regardless of how you create the wifi network for the printer you'll still need to swith between it and the other one when you want to print or want to go back to having internet. You'll have to connect to the Wifi network the printer is on to Print, then switch back to the Wifi network with internet access.
