https security button in Safari 6.0.2

I happened to notice today that the https security button, which is supposed to display in the address/search field whenever one has gone to a secure website, is absent. At least when I'm browsing in a "standard" guest user account. Browsing while logged in under the admin account, the button is present when it should be. For example, my home button in Safari goes to https://www.google.com/ When I click on that and the google home page comes up, on the guest account, there's no gray https button in the address field, but on the admin account there is.

My impression is that the link is NOT secure as long as the button is not displayed (per http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11947), so what might have gone wrong, and how can I fix it?

Advance thanks.

Linc,

Indeed! I turned off all (there were three) my Safari extensions and the security button appeared. After switching them on and off individually, I found that the "iGive Button 5.1.0" extension was the cause. That is now disabled and uninstalled. Thanks!

Now I'm curious to know if the misbehavior was merely cosmetic or something deeper; i.e.- did it just keep the security button from appearing without affecting the integrity of the encryption, or did it corrupt or otherwise render useless any attempts at secure connections?

Thanks for the help Linc!

We'll have our development team look into this but the report is strange. We don't have a 5.1 version of the iGive Button. The latest and most current version is 4.4.1.0. The most current version of the iGive Button is available at http://www.igive.com/iGiveButton.safariextz.

In looking at the member's account on our systems, we can see he is running an old version of the iGive Button from 2011. Had he applied several updates to the iGive Button that have been released since then, this problem would probably not have occurred.

I have set my Safari extensions preferences to "Install Updates Automatically" and assumed that the iGive Button would have been updated as well. That seems not to be the case.

So, I went to the iGive website, and following the links there, installed and enabled the 4.4.1.0 button:

User uploaded file

https button disappeared again.

Disabled 4.4.1.0:

User uploaded file

So, it appears as though iGive's Button version 4.4.1.0 is still doing something it should not. At least on my setup.

Out of curiousity, I unchecked "Install Updates Automatically" and found an icon for iGive Button version 4.4.2. When I tried to install it, nothing seemed to happen. I thought it might have something to do with 4.4.1.0 being disabled, so I enabled that, but still could not get anything to happen.

So, for the time being, I have uninstalled the iGive Button.

Not sure why the update didn't apply, especially since your browser saw that there was one. That is odd. We'll have our developers look at the https lock issue. I CAN however assure you that the iGive Button does nothing to interfere with SSL communications.

We'll get to the bottom of the problem and get it fixed. Thanks for pointing this out.

I've been having the same issue on some sites for years, through multiple OS and Safari upgrades. The https:// and "Encryption button" may show up at first, but disappear when the page loads or when I click on it. For example, https://mylunchmoney.com/SchoolSearch.aspx shows "https://" here and in TextEdit (even without Make Plain Text chosen!) but not on the page itself, and the button is a plain blue globe, not a lock. This happens on PayPal, too. This page Re: https security button in Safari 6.0.2 shows the lock symbol just fine.

I can test the URL by copy and paste (and thank you!), but I wonder if there's something I can do to prevent Safari from hiding the security, or show it again if it hides. This may sound like a non-issue to a lot of people, but a few months ago a family member may have misunderstood the lack of appearance of security, and entered cc data into a nonsecure site; any rate, we had cc fraud 2 weeks after that transaction. If we get used to the security being there even when it's not showing, it's hard for me to say, "Only enter personal info. when it shows secure!" I've been avoiding doing so, but it is starting to have a social cost; e.g., the school is pushing mylunchmoney.com pretty hard. That's what finally got me to write in.

As with npegman back in 2013 showing below on this page, I have no extensions at all showing in my Preferences. I should be on the latest Safari, AppStore shows me No Updates Available, it's Version 7.0.6 (9537.78.2) as of right now.

Found the problem. The buttons disappears when one or multiple security issues happen on your web page. Check the console for security errors and get rid of them.

Most of them are due to you used 'http' instead of 'https' scripts. Major tip from me: change http://www.link.com to //link.com for both images, fonts, javascript files, etc.

It's logical really. When your page has been attacked with a security error, your page is not safe anymore and thus the button disappears.
