Why is my screen not working?

The screen of my Macbook Pro is not working. It turns on, but my screen is not displaying anything, just a black screen. It worked the last time I used it. When I took it to class, it would work. I'm very careful with it. I put it in a padded area made for laptops in my backpack. Help please.
