Am I in danger of losing my proejct if I update Iphoto before purchasing my Book which I have spent about 100 hours on? That's wht Apple is suggesting I do.

Apple doesn't know you have spent 100 hours on a project or anything else. They're just telling you an update is available.
Personally, I would not update any software in the middle of a large project of any kind.
