i have macbook i currently use...i get wireless from roommates PC modem but in my room very slow....takes hours to down load movies off my apple TV...or no signal....I have AirPort Extreme and tried to connect to existing modem using Cat5 but no luck

I use room mate PC or his modem network to connect my Apple TV but download of movies takes hours...bought AirPort Extreme and connected to his modem using Cat5 but my MacBook will not connect. How can I use my AirPort to get faster signal?
