Macbook Pro Stuck on White apple screen with spinning wheel?

Hi, I have the first gen. 15" Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo running Lion. It has this strange problem, it will NEVER boot gets stuck on the white apple logo with the spinning wheel (let it on one night never changed still on the same screen next morning) BUT if I take out the battery and unplug the power cable for about 2 minutes and plug it back in, it will boot up just fine!! And after it boots IT WORKS PERFECT it's fast and appears to have nothing wrong at all. And if I close the lid after I finally get it into the OS it will go into sleep mode the first time and wake back up to the OS just fine like it should. BUT If I close it a second time the indacator light stays bright as if it never went into sleep mode and when I open it back up the screen will never turn on again, untill I reboot. I have already tried all the resets possible. (like holding down the power button for 2 chimes ect.) ALSO IMPORTANT to note, I had Snow Leopard on the Macbook before and it did the same thing I had hoped installing Lion would fix it. Is the logicboard going bad or the hard drive? I tried switching out RAM already. I would love any help because if I know which part to replace I can open it easily and replace it, but I don't have the $$ for another Macbook right now.

Thanks so much for any help!!!
