Dell U2713HM screen blanks on web videos

I'm having an odd problem with my new Dell U2713HM monitor, OSX 10.8, my MacBook Pro 13 and web video.

Often when playing back web video (it definitely happens on YouTube and I think I've seen it happen on other sites too) the screen on the monitor will go blank a few seconds after starting the web video playback. Sometimes it will also happen further into web video playback.

The screen on the MacBook doesn't blank and moving the mouse or using the keyboard will unblank the monitor screen. The monitor is connected via a Display Port cable.

Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it ?

After living with this for another week I now know that it isn't a web video issue. It can happen at any time, it happens probably about once every couple of hours, though sometimes it will do it a couple of times within a few minutes.

Also, it isn't moving the mouse or using the keyboard that unblanks the screen. It always blanks for the same amount of time, somewhere between 1 and 2 seconds. It blanks and if you don't touch the mouse/keyboard it unblanks again less than 2 seconds later.

I guess it might be time to contact Amazon for a replacement 😟

I guess it is a OS 10.8 problem. I have a 30" HP monitor that worked fine with older versions of the OS and now it blanks from time to time with DisplayPort Adapter that is sold by Apple.

In general I am really unhappy with the connectivity of the Mac Book Pro Retina. There were no problems with older MBPs and displays. Now I have to reboot often since it just does not come back after having been taken to a different screen ...

I remembered that my Mac mini also has an DisplayPort. So I booted my Mac mini from my SuperDuper clone (what would I do without SuperDuper) and ran that for a couple of days.

I wasn't using it quite the same as my MacBook (I couldn't because the mini only has 4GB of RAM and so can't run my big Windows virtual machine). But in a couple of days of use there were no screen blanking incidents.

So I guess I can be reasonably sure that there isn't a fundamental problem with my U2713, there must be some sort of incompatibility between my MacBook Pro and the U2713 😟

Hi,

My understanding is that the DisplayPort standard is not built to handle the much higher resolution of the U2713 (I emailed Cable Matters who sell on amazon.co.uk what seems a v. good Mini DP to DP cable and they confirm this). So I wonder if the blanking has to do with that fact?

I would like to connect my mid-2012 MacBook Air 13 in. to a U2713 and am considering a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI (the dual link is evidently necessary to handle the high resolution of the monitor) BUT will this setup handle audio? The DVI standard from what I read does not handle audio.
