Q: Apple-id without credit card

Hi there,

I have another question which concerns the payment methods in iPod Touch / iPads for children.

I recently recieved some credit card withdrawals concerning purchase in apps that my children have done...

I have now blocked the possibility to buy inside free apps, and also set the code to "directly" instead of "15 minutes". I have also deleted my credit card from my own Apple id.

But the question I have is how do you do this with your children. Are you always using your own apple id or is it possible to have one created for a child, without billing address or credit card information.

How do you secure yourself from purchases? I am still a bit nervous after last time so I want to be 100% sure that it never happens again. I have blocked itunes and appstore so they cant reach that,.

What about the gift cards? What happens when the children run out of money? Does it then automatically go over to the billing address or is that the way to at least have a maximum amount that you loose.

I would so much appreciate your assistance on this!

Thanks a lot in advance!

When creating an Apple Id there is no requirement to have a credit card associated with it.

You can simply set it up, and have ti use iTunes and App Store Credit Giftcards available pretty much anywhere.

So the purchases are limited to the ammounn of credit available at any one time in the account.  For more credit, more gift cards would need to be bought and redeemed within iTunes.

You can remove billing info entirely from your account by logging into your account, go to billing/payment info, then chose 'none'.

Alternatively, you can create a new account just for your children without adding any billing info. Go to the iTunes or App Store, download a free item. You'll be asked to create an account at this point, but won't need to add any billing info.

If you add a gift card to your current account, any purchases will be deducted from that first, then any remaining balance will go to the other source on file.

So you mean that it is completely normal that children have own apple id:s without credit card connected. They are 6 and 9 years old.

Instead of connecting it to credit card or billing address I connect them to a gift card??

When money is used there is no way they can purchase more on itunes or appstore?

Sorry for these rather stupid questions, but I am so unused to Apple....

I don't know what is normal anymore, and not for me to decide. I'm simply providing suggestions to your issue. If gift card is not on same account as other billing info in your name, then no.

I do understand you can't decide for me, but just one last question...

Is it possible to create an account without billing nor credit card like you described here earlier. If I then connect a gift card to them each and block the itunes and appstore for them, I would be safer than what I am today or?

    Yeah,

Each one gets their own ID. Its not strange or anything, its just an identifier for them.  They can only use it in their I devices, and it helps them have a sense of self. As opposed to being an extension of their parents.

Kids get their allowance, and can go buy a Gift Card at a store. They then redeem it inside the iTunes or App Store Apps in their devices and they get the ammount of credit they bought in their accounts. There are cards of several credit amounts that cost that ammount of money to buy.

If they purchase a 15 dollar card.   They have to pay 15 bucks at the register in the store, and the get a card with a code they input in the itunes or App Store App so they get 15 bucks added to their account.

They can then spend it in whatever they want to.

Once the 15 dollars are consumed, they cannot spend any more and must buy another gift card to redeem.

If you are worried about the content they can download, You can implement restrictions in their devices and set a password for the restrictions  so they can't change them.

It also makes them aware of what things cost, as they have a lmited amout of money they could spend.

with no Credit Card associated they can never go beyond the credit in their balance.

As for being safe, there's nothing unsafe about having a credit card associated, its just hopw you use it. Since you don;t want thme spoending anything from your credit card, the Gift cards allow thme to spend thier own money should they have any.
