iMessage using Apple ID to send

My iMessage has stopped working and is sending messages to my contacts using my Apple ID rather than through my phone number as a regular iMessage. How can I fix this? I've tried rebooting and resetting and have checked my basic Message settings. Am on iOS 5.1 and do not want to update to 6.
