USB Port not functioning

I recently started having issues with my 15" MBP 6,2 on the "back" USB port. After reading many forums, man pages, and various webpages, I've been unable to repair the issue. This port is not providing power to any USB device I've attempted to use with it. This includes a 5th Gen iPod, iPhone 4s, iPhone 3G, Logitech USB reciever, and finally an external drive.. Here are the following steps I've taken..

  1. Reset the computer.
  2. Turned off the computer, let it be powered off without being plugged in overnight
  3. Reset the SMC
  4. Reset the NVRAM
  5. Tried all of the various equipment with different cables.
  6. I've attempted to run the Apple Hardware Inspector (Or whatever its called) but after holding "D" for quite sometime I become bored and I failed to use that tool.

After all of that I decided to see what console would is displaying. When I plugged in my iPhone I recieved this error.

Here is some info on my machine. It should be noted that I do have a dual boot system with rEFit as my bootmanager. I'm not convinced that my NVRAM reset has been successful with rEFit installed. Any input on how I could fix this issue would be much appricitated. Thank You in advance! - Thrance

Just another update..

I downloaded iousbfamily540.4.1alog.dmg for OS X 10.8.2 then ran the installers in an attempt to update my USB drivers. This was not successful.. Also, I replaced then repaired the permissions for iousbfamily.ktext.. This did not have any affect.

Currently, I am updating rEFIt to check off if the new EFI involved with Mountain Lion broke rEFIt.

Any other suggestions at all would be very much appriciated!

Thanks!

Has anyone find a fix for this? I've been using my Dragon Dictate headset on my MacBook Pro for about a year, and then today, when I plugged it in, I got this:

4/16/14 10:01:04.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF: 47.766 The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in. It will keep retrying. (Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000)

4/16/14 10:01:07.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF: 50.269 AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000 reported error 0xe00002c7 while doing clearing port power feature

4/16/14 10:01:07.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF: 50.269 The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.

Here is what I have tried so far:

  • Reset the PRAM
  • Reset SMC
  • Verify disk (there were no problems)
  • Repair permissions
  • Boot with an external USB hard drive (which works fine on the "problem" computer) that contained an old SuperDuper clone of my hard drive from several months ago. I received the same "The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device" error when I plug in the headset.
  • Tried to headset on another computer, and it worked fine.
  • Plug in an external USB keyboard into the problem computer, and it works fine.

All of this would lead me to conclude that it is a hardware problem. But it seems that if it were a hardware problem, the external USB keyboard and external USB hard drive would not work (which they do). If the problem were with the headset, it wouldn't work on another computer, but it does. So I'm wondering if it's some sort of firmware issue…??????? URG!!!!!!

You are correct that this is a hardware issue in some cases.. I eventually became brave and opened up my MBP and found broken sodering on the logic board and the USB port which lead to the issues. I contemplated repairing the damage myself however, good decision making prevailed and I ended up buying an external USB hub and plugging it in to my good USB port.

Best of luck to you.
