How to get my Calendar to open?

My iPad Calendar, after adding a new entry, now fails to open. The background appears but it then immediately closes down. I have tried closing the application by double clicking the home button and then pressing the minus sign on the calendar icon but it still fails to open up.

Any suggestions?
