Word 2008 Compare Documents causes crash

Has anyone figured out why 2008 Word can't compare certain docs? On some Word docs, whether saved as .doc or .docx, whenever I try to compare using the "Compare Documents" tool I get a crash error -- "Word has encountered an issue and needs to close." I've tried cutting the entire doc and saving it into a clean one, saving to different formats, etc.

Running a unibody 13" macbook pro from early 2011...

Can't find anything on this. Thoughts? Maybe I have to finally break down and learn how to work 2011 Word?

I've seen other postings there that are similar ("I've installed Lion and now Word 2008 crashes whenever I try to open a document, or wheneverI try to edit a document," etc).

Their big insight is to delete the Office preference files, and failing that, re-install Office. This is not reported to have worked, however.
