I have an iphone 4s running 6.0.1

what is the normal capacity required for the "other" section?

After a restore that section is 18.6GB

Cheers

should be no higher than 1.0 GB if it is then you may have a corrupted file.

That was true until iOS 6. Other is now much larger, for some reason. 2 GB is pretty common.

Ok thanks for the heads up Lawrence.

did another restore on my iphone 4S and its 17.5 GB.  I am not very clear why?

what are some other Options to making the "other" capacity area down to 2GB?

Restore as new. There's corrupt data in your backup.

how do I restore as new.  how do I migrate over my contacts, pics, music, and apps that are currently on the phone?

also I am seeing about 18GB of my system drive eaten up during each restore process. where are these iphone backup files kept on the system drive.  might as well clear them out.

You can delete backups from iTunes. Go to Preferences/Devices tab. This tip shows where the backups are stored, among other useful information: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946

If you are currently syncing your contacts with Google, iCloud or an app on your computer (Windows Outlook, Mac or Windows Address Book) they will resync after the restore. If you are not doing any of these you should be.

Pics on your camera roll: You should regularly be copying them to a photo management app on your computer. Just sync them back to the photos app after the restore.

Music and Apps: Sync them back to the iPhone or download them again after the restore. You WILL lose app data (game scores for non-Game Center games, other app data that does not sync to desktop or cloud), however; no way around it.

To restore as new connect the phone via USB cable to a USB port directly on your computer (not a hub), and on the back rather than the front if it is not a laptop. Click once on the phone's name in iTunes. Right click on the phone's name and choose "Back up". When that finishes click on the Restore button on the iPhone Summary tab. Near the end iTunes will ask if you want to restore your backup; click to set up as a new phone.

okay I completely restored with a new OS 6.0.1 on my iphone

I didnt restore from backup.  I am still having issues. I am trying to sync selected music and selected applications.

I click the 'sync' button on itunes and runs right through the sync process but I all the apps did not copy and the music has not moved on to my iphone as well.

when I go to my iphone music folder I can see that all the music is not highlighted and there are sync dials next to all the music.

Also the iphone capacity bar now shows there is 2.4GB used by other and there is nothing for apps and music even thought I chose selected music and apps for the sync.

what is wrong now?  how can I fix these issues.

okay something is messed up with itunes on this particular machine.  if I migrate music on another laptop with the iphone 4s and USB cable the music migrates fine.  Is there anything I can do to itunes to get the library fixed up?  or fix whatever is stopping the ability to migrate music from itunes to my iphone 4s?

I am proud to say sync'ing with the new version of itunes fixes everything - version 11.0 for mac
