computer will not wake up!

I have an Imac 27 inch with Mac OS X10.6.8 purchased in Dec, 2010. The thing will not restart once it goes to sleep. The only way to restart is to unplug the computer, then start over. Tried all the firmware updates but have not resolved this problem. Can anyone help?
