Is there a way to format a numbers file on your Mac to keep it from becoming huge on an iPad?

I have a spreadsheet (one image file @ 64Kb) that is 1.2 Mb on my MBA. When I open it on my iPad in numbers, it jumps to 11.3 Mb. I know that there is a size increase that is standard, but is there any way to avoid it? I tried a blank file with just the word "test" in a cell. It was 134Kb and jumped to 498Kb upon opening with my iPad. That's a lot less of a percentage gap than the other one. Any help at all would be amazingly awesome.
