why is osx 10.8.2 so slow?

I have been using 10.8.2 for a few weeks and aside from the deplorable issue of making scroll bars an option to turn on in preferences I am angry that OSx 10.8.2 is so slow (on a 2.66 ghz powerbook with 4GB memory and no startup items installed). I have recently timed how long it takes to launch safari and itunes. The load time forsafari in osx10.8.2 is 40-60 seconds that for itunes 45-60 seconds. This makes using osx nearly as painful as using microsh*t software and its bloated os. I am really regretting updating my OS, on my old 1gHz macbook running 10.5 loads safari and itunes in less than 10 seconds, an acceptable wait time. Does anyone have any tips for speeding things up?

Then what are you doing in the Mountain Lion Forums if you are still imbedded in an OSX which was superceded well over two years ago? There are Snow Leopard Forums, you do realize.

As such, I never had the thousands of problems others had with audio and video glitches and all sorts of other wonderful surprises.

Thousands?????? Can you confirm these with links maybe???

If the old OSX suits your needs, then great. But millions of people are using ML with no problem. And for Professional Recording and Editing.

1. Go Google and you'll find CHKDSK from another world. Just comparison, no need to deny a fact.

2. I did said Disk Utility was run but found nothing wrong, didn't I?

3. fsck? Yes, tried but useless in that case. (It's about a crashing disk, not about the consistence of a file system.) Apple Store also used their tool to tap on my MBP, problem not diagnosed.

The problem also extended into a verification error on the Time Machine backup and deleted it too. So, I used my Carbon Copy backup.

To answer your second question first, that's like asking someone bobbing in an ocean to prove the existence of water. LOOK. AROUND. You don't need links, every fifth post is a justified problem/complaint. And that's being generous.

As far as the first question, hope springs eternal. I come here every now and then hoping that Apple has fixed things. So far, not.

And I keep HEARING that "millions of people are using ML for professional recording and editing." And every time I ask for proof, NONE IS OFFERED by presumed businesses out to, presumably, do business.

On the contrary, every business left on the MAC platform proud of its name and existence seems to be using Snow Leopard. That is, every business that HASN'T SWITCHED PLATFORMS in disgust and anger.

You need further proof? GOOGLE.

I repeat, stop complaining and trolling in the 10.8.2 Forums if you don't even use the system. You are in a troubleshooting forum. If you expect everything to be Rosy then you will be sadly disappointed. Thousands!! lol

Anyway, if you can't afford to update your software, then don't blame it on technological advancement, just stay happily in the past as others move on.

Bye and Good Luck

Trolling describes what you are doing. I posted a solution, and you've done nothing but attack it as unnecessary when it, indeed, is working for thousands of professional businesses, to which anyone has to GOOGLE to find.

As far as being able to "afford" updating, it seems precious few sound and video businesses can "afford" the cost, no matter how cheap Apple makes it.

Technological advancement is one thing; Lion and Mountain Lion have NOTHING to do with technological advancement and everything to do with dismantling and in many ways gutting a formerly brilliant working OS to make a VERY buggy hybrid that can, very soon, "just work" on handheld toys.

But don't take my word for it; GOOGLE.

Sorry, I missed this 'solution'.

In your not so humble opinion. 😉

The reality is a significant number of OSX users have considerable performance difficulties with 10.8.2. partially solving these requires a considerable amount of time and technical know how that users of Macs have never before needed! As well as hardware upgrades that put Apple on the Microsoft upgrade **** path. OSX 10.8.2 is a buggy slow version of OSX that degrades performance significantly through its memory management problems (that arise from security features). The only solution if you want a useable system with decent application load times is to roll back the OS! The adverse comments serve as a useful warning to users NOT to upgrade the OS unless they want a world of hurt and extra work that will impact their productivity!

The problems you describe do not lie with Mountain Lion. They always lie in one of the following two categories: outdated, incompatible, poorly written or otherwise inadequate software, or inadequate hardware resources. Always, every time, no exceptions.

Mountain Lion is the fastest, most reliable, most evolved, most tested, and most widely accepted OS version in Apple's history:

"memory management problems (that arise from security features)" is unsubstantiated. If you are having problems, determine what is wrong with your system, and fix it. Whatever that is, it is not Mountain Lion.

This is rubbish, I bought a new mac book pro top spec and only installed what comes with OSX Mountain Lion just to demonstrate it IS a problem mainly with Mountain Lion. On my old mac I spent 6 weeks doing all the suggested things at the beginning of the thread and it did not speed things up to any reasonable degree! My point in my original message which started this thread was that OSX ML had lost the mac easy to use and speed which made its reputation and become like the notorious windoze upgrade death spiral. I stand by this comment and the others I have made. It IS NOT primarily old outdated applications, it is a fundamental problem with OSX ML. One brief look at the activity monioir can tell you this.

I'm with you 100%! Apple needs to acknowledge the problems, fix them, and move on. I too have tried all the convoluted recommendations in this thread with little or no success.

I did not think I'd be spending time with Terminal and the command line. If I wanted Linux I could have downloaded a better version on a much cheaper machine.
