As I understand it you can't download anything else until you clear the arrears, free content or app updates etc. Weirdly I've also read a suggestion that you can't switch credit/debit cards attached to the account until this is resolved, so presumably they keep attempting to collect until the money is there and don't want you to remove the current details until they have the money, even if the card expires in the meantime. No doubt if left long enough they would start proceedings.

If you owe money, you can not download anything. If you purchase and itunes gift card, once its redeemed the balance due is taken from the amount.

Good point, I should have mentioned gift cards as the workaround for an expired card that you can't update if there is an outstanding balance.
