Wacom Intuos on Mac OS X 10.8.2: installer fails preflight script

Dear All,

Hello everyone.

I've been a very happy user of an Intuos tablet since long ago. Everything has been working great, with several machine upgrades (G4, G5, MBP) and OS upgrades in between: Leopard > Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8).

Recently my MacUpdate app suggested updating my drivers since they were outdated, so it said. I did. ⚠

With that I lost my connection to the tablet. :-(

I tried to re-install the old drivers (Mac_X_479_2_EN.dmg) from Wacom FTP site and that failed: installation starts, goes a series of initial steps and stops immediately after I authenticate myself as administrator of the machine with the message:

"Installation failed",

"There was a failure on the following installation step: 'run preflight script for Wacom Tablet Driver'. Contact the software manufacture for assistance"

(this is a rough translation of the message in portuguese I see on the screen, with the exception of the text in-between ' ' who comes in english)

From there I already tried most everything, uninstalling automatically, by hand, etc. and nothing works, installation starts and fails with the same message.

Dwelling on information from several foruns I may have finally identified a possible explanation: someone refers that if a package (like Fink or Macports) changes the Perl instalation the Wacom script may no longer function. I did not changed the Perl installation by myself, nor have I installed the mentioned packages. But being an opensource defender I did install the standard XQuartz - X11 environment and I am not sure if it changed the Perl instalation or not.

To determine the perl version, I ran under Terminal:

$ perl -v

This is perl 5, version 12, subversion 4 (v5.12.4) built for darwin-thread-multi-2level

(with 2 registered patches, see perl -V for more detail)

Can anyone help? Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a way a getting the Wacom driver to install under this version of perl (assuming that is the problem here)?

After 15 years of continuous use of my Wacom, I *do* miss it!

Just a brief note to say that the guys from Wacom suggested I used the 6.20 driver instead. Though the wacom driver selection web page points to it it seems the 4.79RC won't work with OS Mountain Lion (10.8).

I was not able to found the 6.20 driver navigating on their web site so I had to check the ftp site directly - great Wacom still abides by old plain vanilla IP protocols ;-)

I think this is the one - ftp://ftp.wacom-europe.com/pub/Mac/pro620-w4_int.dmg

6.20 driver didn't work for me. I'm getting the same script error and it fails the install when it says "Registering Components". I too did the automatic update through MacUpdate and the driver was working prior to this; which was installed when I had Lion then upgraded to 1.8

Here's my setup:

I have Mountain Lion 1.8.2 (12C3012)

Macbook Pro 15" Mid-2012

Wacom GD-0608-U

I am getting the same error on my MBP 2012 Ivy Bridge. Interestingly, I CAN install on a Mac Mini Server 2012 Ivy Bridge! I did try Fix Disk Permissions, but it didn't help.

Yes, that driver (6.20) did the trick, OSX 10.8.3 MBP (late 2012) and Wacom GD 0608U. Thanks.

This driver works perfectly for the wacom Intuos 2 tablet (faithful friend) onto Mac 10.8.3.

Thank you! It downloaded successfully (my previous tries from the Wacom site wouldn't download) and installed and my tablet is working! Let's hope it keeps going.

Thanks joão! your suggestion worked fine with Intuos1 and 10.8.3 + 10.8.4

This was the actual reply from Wacom Europe Support" "I am dreadfully sorry for we no longer provide any driver version that would allow you to use your tablet with the latest Mac system version."

Just deinstall latest version by the Wacom tools in application folder.

I can't thank you enough. Your answer saved me a ton of money, as I cannot work without a Wacom tablet. The Wacom support man told me that what I have is completely incompatible with 10.8.3. He was wrong. This driver you suggested WORKS!!!

Downloaded different wacom drivers many times. Rebooted and rebooted. Nothing. The drivers never showed in my System Prefs Menu in Mountain Lion, UNTIL . . .

I plugged the wacom tablet directly into my 10,1 - 27" iMac back. That worked.

I cannot run the Intuous2 tablet plugged into my Apple USB keyboard connection.

Don't know if this will be of any help but I've just installed the 615 Wacom driver on a new iMac running Mavericks, It works perfectly for me, the updated one immediately threw a wobbly and couldn't find the tablet.
