I just downloaded photo's from my Canon Camera's. Never had any problems before. This time I was able to download them into iPhoto and see them in the event, but when I try and open the picture individually, I get the Black "yield" sign. Why?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.

What version of iPhoto?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package

A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

I'm running version 9.4.2 right now.

And I think it is the managed version. I'm a professional photographer and not to high tech. All I know is that in the past i plug in my camera's and it auto starts iphoto, a click import and they are imported in. Then fromthere I use other software. This time I can't get them to open.

I am having a similar issue as dewman2 (you replied to him today) I looked at iPhoto preferences and the option to 'import to library' was already selected.

when I try to move a photo to desktop I receive the alert: "The file "Filename.JPG" could not be opened because it is empty." Also, can't email photos to myself or post to flickr account. Have not had any problems previously. Any advice?

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have a backup of the library (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
