I am new to the apple community and have a question. Ever since I upgraded to Lion my macbook is continually crashing when I am on the internet. It does not crash when using installed programs. Has anyone else experienced this problem after installing Lion?

What is crashing? Your browser or the entire system? Which MacBook and how much ram?

Thanks for replying. My macbook is a early 2009 model with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Ser. # YD9****4R1. I think the entire system is crashing because when it happens the screen turns a semi transparent black with white words indicating that I have to hold the on button down to shut the machine down and then restart the session again. Hope this is clear.

That's a kernel panic. Usually hardware related but can be software also. My first thought is that you don't have enough ram to be running Lion but I've never heard of that causing a panic. See this page for some things to try in order to start troubleshooting.

Well, thats a new term for me, so I will need some time to troubleshoot my machine per the link you sent me. I do thank you for your help and I will get back to you when I determine what the problem is. I may need some help with some of the suggestions that were in the instructions you referenced.

Anthony, it might be as simple as a browser plug in not playing well. Have you tried another browser like Chrome or Firefox to see if the problem persists?

Well, it happened just a few minutes ago again. I have not tried another browser, I always use Firefox. But since reading your suggestion I am using Chrome. So far so good. Will continue to use Chrome to see if it happens again. I am planning to add more memory after Christmas. I don't guess it could hurt anything, my son checked out this machine and determined it could 4 GB according to Apple.

Adding ram will almost certainly help. Have you tried Safari?

Not since I upgraded to LION. Will do it though. So far everything is good using Chrome. In order to get internet service where I live I have to use a USB modem from Verizon. Due to my location, 3 miles from the nearest tower and close to the Chesapeake Bay, I do not get a strong signal. One out of 4 bars is the norm. Verizon has given up trying to help me. Said all of that to ask; will a weak signal cause this "kernal panic" ? If so, that could be the whole problem. What do you think?

Have not heard of anything like that, but I suppose anything is possible, sometimes it seems like we're dealing with voodoo on these computers. My best guess is that Firefox was using a plugin that wasn't playing nice with OS X or it is possible Firefox itself. Have you updated to the latest version? I think it's 17. something.

Ha, I like that voodoo comparision. It sure seems like it sometimes. I do have the latest version of firefox, 17.1.
