Coming from a Windows background, where pressing "Windows+L" locks the workstation and shows the Login screen, whats the equivelent on a MacBook Pro Retina???

Shift + Control + Power button puts the display to sleep, Command + Option + Power puts the mac to sleep.

Thanks, but not the same... Putting the screen to sleep doesnt "lock" the machine, it just blanks the screen.
Want to lock it so that others cant use it whilst i step away from my desk, but leaving stuff still running.
then you need to set up a password so that when it wakes from sleep, it must be entered to regain access.
I have that set already... when the machine wakes up from sleep, it asks for a password, but when I just sleep the screen, it doesnt ask for password..
EDIT: i wasnt waiting long enough!! i have the timer set so it needs to have slept for a few secnds before requiring the password...
