Q: Dimmed "Find my Mac" with Mountain Lion

I have Mountain Lion.

I get the same dimmed "Find my Mac", but instead of "Update" I have a "More" button.

When I press it, it tells me that "Find my Mac needs a recovery partition".

The recipe given here doesn't work because I have Mountain Lion.

What should I do ?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You need to create a Recovery HD. Was one not created when you installed Lion or Mountain Lion for the first time? Are you able to do this:

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Thanks for your fast reply. Let me just tell the full story. My IMac was eligible for a seagat 1TB disk replacement. Apple did it an reinstall mountain lion, as it was before. I then recuparated my data from the Time Machine. All went fine. I see that the "Recovery HD" was created.

But looking around I found that dimmed "Find my Mac". Here is the picture I get exactly (after having press "More" next to "Find my Mac").

Yes I can reboot the from the recovery HD. I then followed the procedure described here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4065?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

All the step are ok but the last one: On step 5 I downloaded what is suggested ie:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464

But the installation of this dmg failed with:

Many thanks in advance for any additionnal help

It failed because it does not apply to Mountain Lion.

You asked, so obviously you can't read an error message very well. You cannot install that update because it will not work with Mountain Lion. What more do you need? You apparently have no Recovery HD or the one you have is damaged.

Good luck with your problem. I don't work with rude people.

I think you did not read what is my initial problem. I take the time to send 2 screen shoots which clearly explain what Is my problem about.

    1) first screen shot shows that "Find my Mac" in the "Icloud preferences" cannot be turn on. And this is my primarlly question !

    2) The error message is about the recovery HD. I have tested the Recovery HD the way you suggested (even before you suggested it). And this Recovery HD is fine.

    3) I found a recipe on the the web which seems to be my problem. I followed it and end up with the 2nd screen shot, telling the version issue.

what I mean is that I know it is a version issue. that what the message says. I was hopein this forum could give me a answer to my primary problem ...

    It seems not ...

    I will find by myself

Solution found. It was enough to reinstall Mountain Lion from the Recovery HD (which was working).
