When I start the system with the iPod connected,
the lights flash the color orange as if the battery is being charged,
but itunes does't show the ipod icon.
When I start the system and then connect the ipod, this orange light flashes three times and dies.

It worked at first, but then the problem returned.

Does the iPod show up in System Profile -> USB? You can find this application in your Utilities folder.
