Sound Output Stuck in Digital Out

There have been reports of the mechanical connector sensing not working or getting stuck. Have you tried inserting and removing the optical connector once or twice or a bit of tapping on the case in the area of the socket to get it to disengage?

I had the same problem and tried everything (reinstalling fresh OS, etc) and nothing. Finally took it into Apple on the 19th and they said it was a sound board problem. However, I had sound when I had XP on it but no sound in OS X.
Anyway they have had it since the 19th and I want it back, fixed of course.

I resolved the problem simply by reinserting the non-digital audio plug and then removing it. Obviouslly, something mechanical was stuck

I had this problem with my MPB and just got it back. You are right, it is a hardware issue. There is a little switch inside the audio out plug that mutes the onboard speakers, but can get stuck. On mine, they replaced the I/O board, the main logic board, the speakers, and the speaker cables. If you have the Apple Care plan this is probably the best way to go ($1400 in new parts at no charge!) Also, this will totally fix the issue. If you make an appointment with a genious at a mac store they will get you squared away.

I think I've solved the problem.

I inserted the audio jack of my external speakers, and then restarted with the audio jack in all the time. After that, there's been no problem.

Actually, they've replaced too much 🙂

The Left I/O board (with all the jacks) is separated from the main board and surely it's cost is not $1400 🙂
