Suddenly 2 Crashes in a Row

My 2008 Mac Pro suddenly crashed twice. In both cases, the screen went dark, then was replaced by a grey screen with the message, "Your computer was restarted because of an error..." or something like that. I need help interpreting the crash log, to see what is going wrong. The log says these are panics, but I didn't see the old curtain drop effect. Crash Report follows:

correlate with ECC Memory errors.


The Mac Pro uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory. extra syndrome bits (check bits) are stored with each word in memory, and when read back, all single bit errors can be corrected on the fly. Uncorrectable errors are detected, and cause a kernel panic to stop the machine before it poisons your data.


Similar problems could also be caused by processor cache errors, but Memory errors are MUCH more common.

The approach for diagnosing memory errors in an ECC machine can be very different from a "regular" machine. You do not need to write data and read it back and compare for hours to days on end. The ECC Hardware is watching every fetch from memory, and can make a note of when errors occur.


This makes running your Mac doing your work as effective as running a diagnostic on your Mac.


This also means that the catch-all of explaining wacky system behavior by "maybe you are having RAM memory errors" is complete cr@p on a Mac Pro. Memory errors in your machine do not cause it to mis-behave -- they cause a kernel panic.
