Do you have the latest service pack in XP? Can you start Scanner and Camera Wizard manually? If you go into Device manager, can you see any yellow exclamation points in the USB section? If yes, is one of them the iPhone? Are the pictures you are trying to transfer in the Camera Roll?

You may have to uninstall and reinstall iTunes. If so, use this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 and follow it to ensure you delete everything necessary before reinstalling.

If iTunes starts automatically when you connect your iPad to your computer, use the preferences menu in iTunes to deselect this activity. There is a selection that.will turn off iTunes auto start.

Reboot your computer.

Connect your iPad and see if your Photo Wizard starts. If not start it manually and check its preferences setting to start automatically when a camera is attached to your computer.

The only thing you want to happen when you connect the phone is to be able to import pictures, correct? Try this troubleshooting support document in regards to importing pictures http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083. If that does not help, you may need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes, since the USB drivers for the iPhone are installed with iTunes. Could be one is corrupt if you are having trouble getting Windows to recognize the iPhone.

It wasn't appearing in Explorer before, was it?

This sounds quite unusual, as having the device appear in iTunes is generally where the problem lies. If there are photos in the Camera Roll and the device is not causing a USB error in Device manager, and it is visible in iTunes, then I cannot think of a reason it should not show up in Windows. Since you reinstalled iTunes and it did not seem to change the appearence in Windows, the only thing I can think of is to look at an app in the app store to get the photos off.

By the way, how many pictures are on the device? When you tried another computer, what OS was it using?
