While playing music, the volume in my headphones is low, inspite of the volume being high in my iPhone. When I get a text or alert while I'm still listening to music, the volume suddenly becomes high and increases to the actual volume being shown on the phone. Tried listening to music with different headphones, the volume problem still exists, so definitely not an issue with the headphones. Help

I'm using iPhone 4s iOS 5.1.1 too.
Have you tried the following?
Turn on the "change with button" option in Sounds, Ringers and Alerts settings.
Turn off "EQ" option in Music settings.
Turn off " Volume Limit" by setting it to maximum volume in Music settings.
Toggling the mute button on/off (volume might be stucked or something).
If it doesn't work then I believe it's a software issue. An iOS upgrade would be of help. :)
