Time Capsule and Win 7 - Netbios (error 53)

I have a PC running Windows 7 connected via Ethernet to my new 1TB time capsule. The time capsule is in bridge mode (and connected via ethernet to my router/cable modem). The PC can successfully access the internet via the Time Capsule's network, however I can't get the PC to access the Time Capsule as a shared disk.

When i try to enter the device password in the Airport Base Station Agent I keep getting "Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBios is enabled and try again (53)."

I have checked NetBIOS and it is enabled. I have also made sure the time capsule name is less than eight characters and contains no spaces or other unusual characters.

Any ideas why this isn't working?

What firmware version is the TC?

You might need to upgrade the TC to the latest firmware. Unfortunately you need a running Airport Utility to do that..

Is the Win7 updated to SP1 and all the subsequent service modules..?? I am not sure if the Airport Base Station Agent is part of the Airport utility but did you load the latest version of the utility into windows?

If you look at running services you should see bonjour is working.

Do you have a Mac in the network? It will be easier to use a Mac to fix the TC.. if you are stuck with windows, then I suggest you reboot everything. Modem router TC.. windows.. press and hold the reset and put the TC back to router mode.. that won't matter for now.

See if you can access it now. In the file sharing page ensure the guest account has read and write access and the workgroup is set correctly .. WORKGROUP generally.

Ensure all the names are SMB.. including the Hard Disk.. some TC it is data and some it is Time Capsule. This later is wrong for SMB.

Open windows explorer and type in the TC share name.

\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress.. replace with actual name or ip of course.

If you still get nowhere open a command window and ping the TC by name and IP.

Make sure there is no homegroup set in the computer.. turn off ipv6 completely.

Make sure it is set to home not work or public.. plus you can actually disable the firewall..

Keep attempting to ping the TC if it doesn't respond as you make changes.

I am also getting this error, with the exact same setup as acs2.

I have updated all software fully.

I have done a full reset and reinstall of all relevent software/hardware.

The TC name is "DOKDOR" the disk name is "Magic".

workgroup is set to WOKRGROUP for everything.

Pinging says that that network location does not exist.

going into windows explorer and typing \\DOKDOR, or \\10.1.56.212 does not work.

tried to remove homegroup, turn off ipv6, network set to home, and firewall disabled.

nothing is working.

im running windows 7 home premium service package 1 32-bit.

tell me what to do. if you need logs, more computer specs ect just tell me and ill upload.

many thanks

Ping is the key.. for as long as ping doesn't get response you have no connection.

You have done everything I would recommend.. so you have a fundamental network fault.

Plug the TC into the windows computer by ethernet.. and do a full factory reset on the TC.. hold in reset before you power on.. power on the TC and keep holding reset until front LED flashes rapidly.. then release. the TC will now go back to standard IP 10.0.1.1

In command window.. type

ipconfig /all

Check that ethernet is connected and working and should have IP 10.0.1.2 and then try pinging 10.0.1.1

If the ethernet does not have the right IP open the networking area to the TCP/IP settings and ensure it is set to auto.. everything.. ip, dns etc.

Tell me what you get.

ok here is what is put out by command prompt:

Pinging 10.0.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 10.0.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255

Reply from 10.0.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255

Reply from 10.0.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255

Ping statistics for 10.0.1.1:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss).

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

So I am lost.. if AU has access.. and internet is working through the TC.. and everything else is working I see no reason that i can explain for the lack of access. This is now in the category of network voodoo.. get another pc and see if it can get access.. or boot the present computer from PE boot disk and see what happens.

You have something blocking access.. your only way now forward is to prove is it the computer or is it the TC.. so the easiest way is to invite a friend with a win7 laptop and have them come and try.. if it fails then I would say it is the TC.. that is not adequate proof but sure is looking like it.

If it works fine then the pc install of win7 has something wrong.. reinstall the OS.

You have done everything possible on the TC.

There is a final test..

Remove the TC from the network.. do a factory reset. Plug it via known good working ethernet cable into the computer.. totally isolated from the network. PC isolated from the network. no wireless so only the TC.

Ensure you can ping the TC.

Do a minimal setup of the TC.. change the few names.. turn on guest access.. make sure workgroup is set correctly.

No access reset the TCP/IP stack

http://www.lamnk.com/blog/computer/reset-tcpip-networking-stack-in-windows-7-and -vista/

Make sure you are logged into the computer with a user that has full admin rights.

All security software off.. all firewalls off..

If you still cannot raise the hard disk in this setup you never will from that PC at least with that install. .. the PC I would say has something corrupted in the setup to not connect to network drives..maybe hardware.. but being windows more likely software.. but I gave up PC a goodly while ago.. with that great version vista.. shudder. But I have PC's on my network running xp, vista and win7 all of which have no issues whatsoever accessing the TC.

Put a different hard disk in the computer and reinstall win7 and see if it still not working.

Buy an external drive like everyone else.. and not expect mac stuff to work with PC.
