How do I select my own custom picture?

How do I select my own picture? I.e. not camera nor pre-installed...

I submitted this question from the "Changing your user account profile picture" help page for Mac OS.

Sorry, new to these forums. Didn't realize I had to click 'see other questions' to view the rest of the thread...

What a backwards and HIDDEN way to solve this: preview your image, CMD-A, CMD-C, click profile pic in user dialog, CMD-V.

Sorry probably my fault, I'm used to Windows where every option is clearly available from the start.

system preferences > system > acounts > drag an image from the finder into the image well cicled below:

That sounds like the Hidden Apple Way, so I tried that earlier on, but my file was on the Desktop. Didn't work. I guess I'm doing it wrong. The copy-paste method did work.

To Apple: Off-topic, when I click on the link in the e-mail I got via Gary, I go to a webpage with this error:

Error

An general error occurred while processing your request.

Even though his picture inside the post on this forum looks O.K.

The image change worked as described above for me albeit I had to hit Set at the end.
