Two email notification sounds

When receiving an email on my iPad I often get two notifications. Same sounds, just one after the other. This "always" occurs if I send myself an email, such as sending a link from somewhere online so I can read it later on a larger screen. Any idea why the duplicate notifications and how to stop them?
