"Timed Out" error message when performing Restore

Trying to restore my iPod Touch 4 to original factory settings. Have tried 5 times and each time receive this error message: "There was a problem downloading the software on the iPod "Blackie". The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

Don't know what 'hetwork settings' they're talking about?? My network connection IS active, as I was logged in to iTunes. This error message comes up when the download is nearly complete - not at the beginning of the process. It doesn't matter if I'm actively on the computer during the download or not - the error message comes up every time whether it's late at night or early in the morning.

I bought a new iPod Touch 5 and want to sell the iPod Touch 4 and am trying to wipe it clean so that I can sell it.

Any help someone can offer would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Update 2 -

In Sys Pref under Security I found 'Firewall'. It is turned OFF. There is no firewall up and this iTunes Restore download still gives the 'timed out' error message.

So now I have checked both the AV software MacKeeper, now uninstalled and the Firewall which is not turned on and still cannot complete the Restore download.

Still need help with this if anyone has the solution. Thanks very much.

Tried doing the Restore in Recovery Mode - total fail. Same 'timed out' error message appears.

In using manual install as you suggest, which might be the answer....there are 4 different firmware choices from the downloads for iPod T4. I am not certain which one to choose. In going to settings in my iPod T4 and clicking on 'about' it does not give me the info I need to choose the right download. Can you tell me how to determine which of those downloads is correct? My iPod T4 is photo/color but I don't know where to look to make the right download choice.

Sorry to have to ask for more help. Thank you for this iDevice Troubleshooting 101 link, I think it will work if I can determine which download I need.

Will wait for your advice. 🙂

It doesn't appear that this firmware is available to download. There was a place where you could enter the last 3 numbers of the device's SN so they can locate the correct firmware but those last 3 numbers were not recognized by the website.

I so hope that I can resolve this problem myself without having to take this iPod T4 to an Apple store. Maybe there is another website where I can find the correct firmware?? Sure hope so. Thank you for telling me which firmware I need to find. If there is another website that you know of, I could try that.

Hope there are still more possibilities?

Thanks so much for more direction.

I realized that I bought this iPod T4 about a year ago, so decided to check the date and it is still under the 1 year ltd. warranty until 21 Dec. I contacted Apple via Chat and was informed that the problem may lie in the version of iTunes I was running 10.7. Today Apple released v. 11 of iTunes which I was instructed to download. It's TOTALLY different from iTunes 10.7 - drastically different in fact.

The Apple Chat Rep set up a phone call appointment forl 8:00 pm ET tonight where another Rep will call me to make sure the restore was accomplished OK. With v. 11 of iTunes I can't even find the restore option!!! The phone Rep will have to help me navigate v. 11 of iTunes. It doesn't seem intuitive at all. Maybe it's just me?!?!

Thank you for sending this new link for firmware. It's not clear to me right now whether I'll need it or not. The phone Rep will probably somehow be able to resolve the problem. If not, they'll probably send me to the nearest Apple store if the problem is hardware, as it would be covered under the warranty. I will give another update as to what transpires as a result of the phone call with the Apple Rep.

Again, thank you so much for helping me. 🙂

Update ~

After talking with the Apple Rep via phone I was nearly embarrassed to learn how simple it is to erase all contents of the iPod T4 from the device itself.

1) Settings - General - Reset - Erase All Contents & Settings - hit Erase iPod 2x - DONE.

The restore to factory settings does not have to be done from iTunes. The easiest way to do it is from the device itself.

The Rep did walk me thru the steps to finding 'restore' on iTunes v. 11 as you mentioned in your last message.

Again, thank you so much for your help & troubleshooting. I appreciate it very much. The problem is now resolved.
