appleeventsd and 10.8.2: Various issues

Like many folks in the discussuions area since the update to 10.8.2, I have slow sleep times and slow down in the finder.

My new issue is with MS Word 2011 and EndNote 6.

Basically trying to format a bibliograpghy for a scientific paper with Word 2011 and Endnote 6.

MS Word hangs and freezes when trying to perform this task.

Mind you, this worked fine before teh 10.8.2 upgrade. No other new changes to system or software.

I contacted support through EndNote (Thompson-Reuters) and they said it is a know issues when using 10.8.2 and MS Office 2011 or Endote.

Their reponse:

Thank you for contacting Thomson Reuters Technical Support.

I deeply apologize for the inconvenience you are facing. However, this issue is not caused by EndNote or Word. This is an Apple Mac 10.8.2 bug that causes issues with a variety of applications including EndNote. Please refer to the below page for more information on this:

As mentioned, the easiest way to resolve this issue would be to log out and log back in to the user account, or force quit "appleeventsd". To force quit, follow the steps below:

1. Click on Go menu and choose Utilities.

2. Open Activity Monitor.

3. Locate "appleeventsd" and click on Quit Process.

4. Click on Force Quit.

If this issue persists, then you may need to perform a clean re-install of Word and a restart. Instructions for Word 2011 clean install are here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2435801

After reinstalling Word, restart the machine and open EndNote and then Word. Please see if you are able to insert and format references in Word.

Our development team is in contact with Apple, and we are hopeful that they will address this issue in an Apple update in the near future. Another potential solution would be to remove the 10.8.2 update and stick to 10.8.1 until Apple resolves the issue. We appreciate your patience and patronage.

Once again, we deeply apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Seems we need a 10.8.3 fix. I have tried all the other suggestions in other posts to resolve the issue with only a temporary fix.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I did report this to Apple also.

My concern is this is affecting more than just Endnote X6 on my Mac Pro, but Apple Mail, MSWord 2011 just by itself, Safari, Chrome, and others. It causes my mouse to slow down or stop altogether, then the cursor will suddenly catch up to wherever I've moved it since it stopped. I'll continue typiing and the text on the screen will just stop, but suddenly it will start typing on the screen again, very slowly at first, then rapidly catch up to where I really am in the typing. It's quite disconcerting. I shut down the appleeventsd process and everything seems to work okay again, but the process will restart, sometimes not for quite awhile, sometimes within 30 seconds or so. I have to leave activity monitor open and am sometimes shutting down the appleeventsd process every minute of so over a period of an hour. Not very productive.

I've read a lot of the background and causes for the appleeventsd calls that bring the process to bear, but their could be hundreds of running programs that are causing the process to start up and I just don't have the time or skills to track them all down and figure out what to do about them.

Any help or suggestions truly appreciated.

I am having this problem too. Very frustrating! But in my activity monitor there isn't anything listed as "appleeventsd" so I don't know how to fix the issue. There is a process (0.0% CPU) called "dbfseventsd" that I have tried to quit but it doesn't help being able to use Endnote (and it comes back quickly). I'm using EndNote X4 and don't want to spend the money to update. Are there other options? I will try reinstalling Word but I'm not very computer savvy and so am hesitant.
