Q: iTunes 11 crashes when syncing iPhone

I just installed iTunes 11 and it crashes every time I try to sync my iPhone 4S.  As soon as it tries to update an app on the iPhone it crashes.  Any ideas?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 8GB Memory

After working for 2 weeks, iTunes crashed again this morning.  After restarting my iPhone 4S and my Mac the sync worked.

I've restarted iPhone & Mac to no effect. iTunes 11 still crashes when trying to update apps and the apps will not update with Wifi. Has anyone out there got a solution that works ?

I had to delete and re-install the Apps directly on my iPhone and iPad - NOT iTunes on my laptop.  Synching the App update with iTunes on my laptop continues to cause the update to hang and iTunes to crash.

I did a reinstall of the hung up Apps from my device.  I continue to do the App updates FROM MY DEVICE - NOT MY LAPTOP.

Now, I can Sync without iTunes crashing...

Hope that works for you untill Apple releases a fix...

I have been working with an Apple Rep to diagnose and, hopefully, fix this problem.  I have been sending him my iTunes Crash Logs.  I received an email from him asking if I had the iToner app installed on my Mac.  He said that it might be related to my problem.  I did have iToner installed.  The app has not worked or been updated for over 2 years, so it was an easy decision to delete it.  So far the problem has not returned.  If you have iToner and want to delete it, be sure to delete the app and the iToner plug-in from iTunes.  The location is Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/iTonerSupport.bundle.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

    I deleted my iToner application.

But could not find the plugin either in the library or anywhere on my HDD?!?

    The synch still crashed.

Unchecked the "Sync Tones" in iTunes, and it then synched successfully!

Not completely resolved, but it works...

    Thanks again!

I have iToner as well.  But, the application is on the desktop only and not on my phone.  So how does a desktop application prevent my phone's apps from synching all the way when that app is not synched to the phone.  Sounds like they are looking to blame a third party for "Forstalling" the fix.

    FYI:

The iToner iTunes Plug-in and its Folder are well hidden - even to searches of the drive.

Ambrosia tech support showed me how to locate it:

    Finder

    Go Menu

    Hold down Option key

A hidden Library Folder will magically appear between Home and Computer in the Go Menu

Open this Library Folder, where you can then drill down to:

    iTunes

    iTunes Plug-Ins

    Remove File "iTonerSupport.bundle."

I found that if you had a crash when an app was updating, the app may say "waiting", or something like that, on your iPhone.  Try deleting the app from your iPhone and downloading it again.  That worked for me back when I first encountered the problem.  I have not had any problems since I deleted the iToner plug-in.  The release of iTunes 11.0.1 may have a fix for this also.

Sorry, I should have said that in my first post.  Most people don't know that Apple hid the User Library folder back in Snow Lepoard I think.

I have just found this link and I too have had a brutal experience since buying the iPhone5.

I have become incredibly familiar with the colourful swirly wheel and restarting my MacBook Pro.  My iTunes also locks up regularly and sometimes it seems to hit a song or app and all I can do is hold down the power key and start again.

I will seek to remove that iToner file and update software.

I seem to have extra troubles when Aperture is open - does anyone esle find the same thing?

frustrated...I am used to 'it just works' as well...

I followed all of the steps to find the iToner bundle but the iTunes Plug-ins folder was empty.  Did I need to do something else?

You may be seeing a different problem.  Make sure that there no apps on your iPhone that are hung in the "Waiting" state.  If you see that, delete the app from the iPhone.  You may want to delete it from iTunes also and download it again.  When iTunes hangs with the rotating beachball you probably don't have to turn your Mac off and restart.  Try holding down the option key while you click and hold the iTunes dock icon.  You should see a Force Quit option.  Try that before you force your Mac to turn off.

Just a short answer to whom it may help: I kept having that "iTunes crashes when syncing" problem on my PC, and I just solved it by disabling a service handling virtual USB sharing for my virtual machine software. This is a bit specific, but someone in the same situation could benefit from this tip. Personally, I am happy to finally be able to launch a sync without having to wonder when it would crash (and force me to reboot the PC btw!).

I have always had this problem of iTunes crashing when I try to sync it, both with my 3gs and my 4s.  I played around with a lot of things and I figured out that iTunes will not sync if I have any podcasts saved on my iPhone.  So each time I want to sync I have to delete every single podcast.  Then after I sync, I go back into my iTunes app on my phone and download my podcasts again.

You would think that Apple would have fixed this bug by now.
