Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

I just upgraded to iTunes 11 and noticed that iTunes DJ is missing from the Sidebar as well as from the dropdown menu. I used this feature often at my house for parties so iPhone users could have fun suggesting music.

What happened to this feature? Is it still there, but hidden?

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

First they updated the AirPort Utility to make it look like iOS, and removed tons of functionality (profiles, client connection views, etc...)

Now, they update iTunes to look like iOS, and remove something as powerful as DJ. iTunes DJ was a HUGE part of the parties I throw (along with letting other iOS users vote on the next song). Up Next is not a sub for this (especially without the remote voting feature).

I really hope Apple reconsiders this ommission, and I hope (although foolishly, it appears) that they don't keep turning our Macs into desktop iPads.

Another thing that I will really miss....the ability to open a playlist in a separate window (it made creating long playlists really easy as you could drag/drop from your main library window into the 2nd playlist window).

No it doesn't. Two different issues:

  • The random button you are highlighting will randomize a playlist (or arguably, an entire library if you do that).
  • The iTunes DJ would essentially dynamically create a playlist that could be voted on by randomly selecting from a pre-determined list of songs that meet some kind of criteria—the simplest being pulling from a pre-defined playlist.

i dont think binford ever actually used DJ, thats why hes not understanding

You think wrong. I used it every day. As a matter of fact, it's the only way I used iTunes.

Which is what the person I was responding to was complaining about.

Yup. So, play a playlist and select random. You're looking at a random selection of a pre-determined list of songs that meet some sort of criteria.

The thing that I don't know about, and can't comment on right now because I'm not on a network that I can connect my phone to a try, is voting by guests. Which you'll notice, I've said nothing about. But let's not let facts get in the way of a good flame, shall we?

In any case, considering how popular Remote has been, I doubt that they'll remove that particular feature. But that's just me being reasonable here, ya know. Much less fun than running around with pitchforks.

Have fun with that.

P.S. Please use the feedback link in iTunes (although they don't even have version 11 in the itunes version list yet ⚠) -- to let them know that DJ was useful (and multiple windows, for that matter).

Noticing, as I said in another thread, that Apple hasn't even bothered to add iTunes 11 to the list of versions about which to give feedback.

Fair enough, I love a good flame as much as anyone else. But this feature is in fact missing 😟

You can leave that field blank. Just put "Please bring back iTunes DJ in iTunes 11" in the subject.

True, but don't you think that in the months when it knows new products are coming it could notify people who maintain web pages? It sometimes takes months for the latest version to appear on feedback pages.

gave the feedback, after testing the new version on a windows pc.

I must say, gui is great, but that's about it. the one function that was always playing, iTunes DJ, is gone, sniff sniff, will play with it for a while on that **** windows machine, but on my iMac i'm gonna stick with 10.7 till the first update for iTunes 11
