Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

With iTunes DJ you could select a smart playlist and DJ would play randomly from that list forever.

Example: I have a smart playlist that loads in other smart playslist, working together like a matrix they do this: I have a smart playlist that populates with unheard podcast, when a podcast is heard it's removed from the playlist. A playlist adds five songs that I haven't heard in two weeks and where added to iTunes in the last 12 months. A playlist also adds 10 songs that I haven't heard in the last two months. A playlist adds 5 music podcast that have not been played. So as the songs are played they are removed from the playlist and the playlist is constently refreshing with new music.

Up Next can't deal with this, you have to keep adding the new additions to the playlist. While, again, DJ lets me point it at this smart playlist (that loads the other playlist) and play forever with no more action needed from me, period. And DJ would show me the songs that where played, which is handy because those songs are now removed from the playlist DJ is playing.

Apple removed features from iTunes and did not replace them, you can not recreate all of iTunes DJ's features, period. Get over it.

Sorry Chris CA. That last sentence of mine was not meant to be directed at you. I should have been more clear. It was directed at the general sentiment that Up Next fully replaces iTunes DJ.

Fortunately I had a 2TB External HD that still had ITunes DJ on it....so.........I created a Jukebox icon for the HD icon...plugged it into my MacPro, which is hard wired into my sound system, and used this hard drive which I named Jukebox...as a start up drive on the MacPro.

HI all:

With over 54000 views and over 500 posts to this topic, itunes dj's removal from iTunes 11 is a hot button issue. With rudeness and tempers flaring.

As for me, I am angry at Apple's decision to remove this feature. I have used it every day for almost as long as I have had this mac (2006). If it's not broke, why fix it? I know somepeople disliked the function, however it was easy to disable it in iTunes preferences.

What I like less, is the lack of a supportive response. I do not understand why it can not be reimplemented as a preference item where is can be used or not used at will. Up Next doesn't replace iTunes DJ. It is something similar and not the same as, no matter how many ways people find to kludge it to get it function more similar to iTunes DJ.

I would appreciate any responses and respectfully request apple return this function to itunes.

I did not "hear" it, I presumed that Apple is reticent to reimplement it due to it's apparent lack of response on this.

Does anyone know how you can change the playlist and hence change the queue of songs in UPNEXT without cutting off the song currently playing?

I used to use iTunes DJ for background music in my restaurant and at some point in the evening the staff simply had to change the playlist from say "evening mellow" to "evening upbeat" and the queue would refresh without chopping off the current song. I can't see a way of doing it with UPNEXT unless you stand over the player and hit the shuffle button exactly at the time the current song fades.

If this is the only answer then its yet another nail in the coffin for the latest version.

The only thing worse than Apple's descision to unilaterally remove iTunes DJ from iTunes and their lack of response to an obvious serious error on their part, would be for those Apple lovers out there to scrap about it. Even if you never used the DJ feature you can't begrudge others who miss it terribly. There is no replacing this feature and as a photographer-artist who spends his whole day within the earshot of his iMac while I work in Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom and my light table, to have your favorite music playing, without have to make choices and to be able to shape the playlist as it evolved, was a wonderful part of the creative process for me.

Hi Agards,

Just hold down the option key. The little play icon on the top left will change to a "+". Click that know and it will add the songs without stopping the currently playing song. Or you option/click the shuffle icon and it will add the shuffled songs without stopping the music.

Thanks Kasimir but that's only a partial solution.

Yes you can indeed hold down shift and move a shuffled list of songs into the UPNEXT feature and clear the old songs without interupting current playback

However UPNEXT (or UPYOURS as I have renamed it) then doesn't indicate what playlist the queue of songs is from.

So this is progress - before I just instructed staff when using DJ just click on the little list, select the required playlist and Dj will do the rest seemlessly. Now I have to tell staff click on the playlist you want, then mouse over the little shuffle icon at the top, press shift and make sure the little arrow next to the shuffle icon turns into a little cross then click on the shuffle button and then select clear songs from the pop up box. And then you will just have to remember what playlist you are woking with because UPNEXT won't tell you.

What happened to the famous Apple intuitive navigation and menu structure which was by the way abundant in the previous version.

Guess it's time to sack Itunes.

Ok,... we have iTunes 11.0.2 out now. Anyone know if any of the DJ functionality is restored in this version?

- Guest song request/voting via Remote?

- Random ongoing playing from your library, with a preference for higher rated songs, without having to select any songs/playlists, and without having to jump through any hoops?

- etc.

I HOPE SO!!! Please post here if you learn anything in this regards. I'm not updating (from my rollback to 10.7) if my favorite, most useful functions are still missing from 11.

As a side note, I think I understand why in the switch to Up Next (and, btw, I loved the comment made earlier of personally renaming it UpYours) they didn't include the missing DJ functions - I suspect they were relatively processor/memory intensive and leaving them out made iTunes operate faster. That still doesn't justify to me removing functionalities that were my primary uses of the program.

I loaded 11.0.2 hoping the same but it was a forlorn hope - still as c**p as ever
