Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

Still missing the vote feature, which I miss. Having a get together at my place and having music everyone liked playing without having to let people have access to my computer was priceless.

People were able to search through my entire library or playlist I set and request songs from their own phones. They were also able to vote on upcoming songs to push them higher up the list. It was like having a Jukebox that almost everyone could control right from their phones. Keeping greasy hands, spilled drinks, and prying eyes far away from my computer.

yes i miss Guests would bring their iPhones, fire up remote and instantly start voting songs up and down as they were playing in iTunes DJ. THIS is the functionality that's missing. And it cannot be replaced with any other solution.

I have a fix. And do not blow this off as another smart playlist shuffle function, becouse this one actually works.

Create a smart playlist that will include everything that has one, two, three, four, or five stars.

Create a smart playlist that will include everything that has two, three, four, or five stars.

Then create a smart playlist that will include all 5 of these playlists.

Shuffle the last smart playlist.

This will recreate the weighted shuffle function that all of you so long for. Songs that have higher ratings will play more often than songs with lower ratings. I myself was a huge fan of iTunes DJ and miss it dearly. I especially miss the voting function that was an important part of iTunes DJ and I am fighting the battle to bring it back. For now, this is a substitute for a lost important function.

I know this isn't one click like it used to be, but it is an option.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but so far as I can tell this 'weighted shuffle' scheme will NOT replicate the most basic function of iTunes DJ - an automatic, dynamically evolving menu of music playback.

However elaborately created, what you end up with here is still a static (albeit shuffled) playlist, which thereafter will play the same songs in the same sequence over and over again until a user intervenes to change things.

By contrast, and given a large library, what you get with iTunes DJ is a dynamic, constantly evolving menu of music. You might hear the same song twice in one week and not hear it again for months. The musical menu you enjoy tonight is different from any you've heard before, and different from any you'll hear in the future.

The correct solution is to not migrate to iTunes 11 at all. Or, if you're unfortunate enough to have already done so, seriously consider upgrading back to iTunes 10.7. If a large enough proportion of users were to rebel by sticking steadfastly on iTunes 10.7, perhaphs Apple would re-evalute its strategy of stripping all functionality from OS X (and related apps) that cannot be conveniently ported to an iPad.

The only "fix," I've been happy with is to revert to 10.7

And, I've not looked back since, inspite of constant reminders from Apple to "upgrade." to 11.02.

I've only ever used D.J. to create random song suggestions for creating my own playlists and I've not seen any "work-around," that I'd be happy with in 11.02 which would supply that function.

And, with D.J. the "refresh," button does the job in an instant.

Apple should start listening to its customers in this regard. Just bring it back, Apple. Make it an option in the preferences.

Chris, I think hundreds of the people on this thread have gone to itunes product feedback to bring up the loss of itunes dj.....I've done it about 5 times, there are 37 pages of people who want it back. itunes DJ is all i use, and I'm glad I was able to go back to version 10.7. Apple is really being Bozo about this...pushing many of use over to Android!

but, let's keep trying to see if Apple can get smart enough to put back the best feature of itunes...

That may be the case, but I suspect that it's yet one more example in the "modern age," of Orwellian "New-speak!"

A person would hope that someone, somewhere in Apple is taking all of this in and that there are moves afoot to do something about it, or, at least, someone could provide us with some feedback in our direction as to why they don't/won't.

The fact that they state that they "can't" (why not?) anwswer messages etc is another example of what's wrong with the "modern age."

Apple could possibly take some leaves out of Amazon's books and actually engage with its customers.

I've been an online DJ for Second Life, and creating an online radio station for personal use. It was great to have iTunes DJ combined with a Icecast streaming server and Nicecast from Rogue Amoeba - they worked together quite well to create a low-cost audio streaming solution. It had most of the common features you need to create and support a simple stream, and was a tool that most people were familiar with. I'd recommend these everywhere for those without the time or money to invest in SAM Broadcaster, Traktor, or the other professional-level tools. While you can still do some of this with the new "Up Next" functions, I find it much harder to manage than the old way. In the meantime I've reverted back to iTunes 10 on my systems - but it's not something that I can recommend to the general public now.

I'm all for simplification, but a complete rewrite and stripping out of major function seems to be a bit much. It's kind of like taking your phone and removing SMS. Sure, you can send via email, but you don't just rip out SMS for everyone because one person doesn't use it.

Ah guys, I love you - so far I thought I was the only one mourning the death of iTunes DJ, but you restored my faith in humanity the iTunes community...

I even raised a Radar on a very specific subset of iTunes DJ that Up Next cannot perform anymore, the ability to take a live updating smart playlist based on Rating and change the rating while playing the song, which should interfere with the playback (and didn't, with iTunes DJ) but of course, with Up it does...

As you can see, it was closed, but I even got a nice reply from the iTunes team (or whoever's doing their customer support) explaining me that this behaviour is as designed.

Anyway, Apple's track record in bringing back features mourned by a subset of its user is not that great, so let's console ourself a little bit more until we'll have to do the probably inevitable and upgrade to whichever iTunes version breaks the rest of our infrastructure.

I've been dreading that moment for 3 months now but haven't been able to put it into words. I hit every Apple TV and Remote update grimacing while walking on eggshells with one eye closed.

Can't remember who else posted this sentiment earlier in the thread but I, too, built my wireless whole-home entertainment experience around the party voting functionality of iTunes DJ. I'm just one user but I converted a dozen new fans. I think the only reason it wasn't a huge success was it got lost in the app. If iTunes DJ was a separate Mac/PC app that had a free download for a Party Guest version of the iPhone/iPad app, I'd gladly pay for Party Host features.

I just don't understand why Apple continues to take great features away. Did no one in beta testing say anything?? Please bring iTunes DJ back!!! I've submitted my feedback urging to resurrect the feature.
