Q: Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

I just upgraded to iTunes 11 and noticed that iTunes DJ is missing from the Sidebar as well as from the dropdown menu. I used this feature often at my house for parties so iPhone users could have fun suggesting music.

What happened to this feature? Is it still there, but hidden?

Uh-oh. I can't revert to iTunes version 10. I copied it from my wife's Mac onto a thumb drive, but when I tried to move it into the applications folder, I was informed that iTunes is part of the Apple OS and could not be replaced or deleted.

Can anybody tell me how to defeat the evil Mac OS?

Nor will you be able to see what has been played so that you can do updates such as ratings in simi-real-time.  The last.fm add-in for iTunes so that it can track what you play will start the process all over again if you do anything to the track... which means that it may say that you have played a track twice when you only played it once.

Had I looked on the net re "11," I'd've seen a number of very specific warnings posted about D.J.

    Lesson learned!

That is why when I upgrade any program, I aways make sure that I can go back to what I had.  In this case I had backed up all of iTunes.

I can probably get used to the inteface but it seems kludgy and I miss the convenience of iTunes automatically creating a random song list.  And I don't want to turn on iTunes Genius; AFAIC it's nothing more than a market research tool.

There are definitely "work arounds" to make most of the functions that you want to happen....happen.  The problem is that it was so much more functional and intuitive before.  I don't want "work arounds".....I don't want to have to "figure it out".  That's not what the Apple IOS is supposed to be about.  It's supposed to be the most intuitive operating system available.

We can only hope that there are real people that are taking real notes on some of the great comments that have been made by people that are seeking out this forum for a reason.  These are the real pro's.  The people that actually use the system.  The people that can give real reason why certain things need to stay....and others need to go away.

I'll continue to keep my fingers crossed that "the powers that be", will realize that THIS part.  iTunes DJ.....was not the part that needed to be eliminated....it needed to be expanded upon.

Thanks, FireDune, for the link to the discussion about downgrading to iTunes 10.7. Unfortunately, that discussion appears to be for Windows users. They recommend deleting iTunes 11. That's not possible on a Mac; it issues an alert saying that you can't delete it because it's part of the OS.

George, are you on a Windows machine? What you're describing should be impossible on a Mac, but if you did it, then I want to know how!

I am going to open up a can of worms here....

I use both Mac and PC and in a previous job I had I had to make sure that the Mac and the PC's on the network talked together -- not an easy task.  For repair purposes like HD replacement, PC's has Mac beat as far is ease and intuitiveness of repair -- at least when I change a drive on a PC, I don't need suction cups to pull the screen off then have to remove the monitor just to get to the hard drive... I know Apple wants you to spend big bucks to replace hardware....

As far is intuitive operating system, they both are sorta about the same... if you can use one, you can use the other.   iTunes was intuitive until this last update.   The only thing that was kind of not was the abiliy to scan your entire iTunes folder and add music files not in your library.  Sure iTunes has the folder that if you place anything in it that woiuld be added to iTunes but I reather that I place it in a folder where I know where it is and iTunes does the scan to find it.

If you go to Control -> Turn Shuffle On, then select one of the options - by song for example, and then press play. The tracks will be played randomly.

The Up Next feature will display the next tracks selected, and you can move them around or delete them. To add a track to the list you just hover over a track and then click on the arrow that appears.

At the moment I'm missing my iTunes DJ. I can work with the new method, but with Coverflow missing as well, this is really taking away from my playing pleasure.

And when it runs out of things to play it just stops... with iTunes DJ it never run out things to play.

I think we should all bombard the feedback section for Apple to bring back itunes DJ, cover art & album artwork and / or any other features we miss

I also wrote an email to tim cook - i suggest everyone that wants it does. Though he obviously doesnt read them but his PA or someone in his office does go through them. Thats what i heard.

Beats us just waiting with our fingers crossed

Even when you figure out a work around for mac [ie downloading itunes 10.7 from the apple site - search and you will find it-  and then associating it with an older "previous itunes library" - which i havent figured out yet - people are saying that you lose all your playcounts, starts & ratings. Pretty crap to go over all that again if you are like me and keep over 100 GB of music.

If anyone has found a way to downgrade to 10.7 and keep their previous library intact on a mac without any file corruption or loss of data, please share it or post the link to a how to video

    Much appreciated
