Q: Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

I just upgraded to iTunes 11 and noticed that iTunes DJ is missing from the Sidebar as well as from the dropdown menu. I used this feature often at my house for parties so iPhone users could have fun suggesting music.

What happened to this feature? Is it still there, but hidden?

Great questions @gmorgjr. It really does seem to me that they've gotten so big they that think they know best, and just really aren't listening. It's the kind of thing that has really kept me from being an Apple fan, and very much a reluctant user - and only an Apple user at all, because the platform I preferred, webOS, died because of corporate HPs corporate ineptitude and stupidity. I would've gone with android, but it is too fractured the platform – I want consistency, and though it (and Apple in general - like w/ the stupid removal of DJ from iTunes) frustrates me pretty regularly, iOS is the best remaining in that regard. C'est la vie.

The problem is that you need to constantly move things around.  You also cannot simply "refresh" to re-scramble the playlist.  Finally, you need to click an icon to simply see what's "up next".  The point of iTunes was to not need to tend to the music constantly yet still have an enjoyable variety of songs.

I just don't get why one would try to improve an application in terms of speed and design and additionally remove a really good and working functionality like the remote voting of iTunes DJ. This was the feature that kept me using the clumsy and slow app iTunes is. It would still fit into the Up Next concept.

Now I can happily move to a different app that also has better support for other operating systems.

I think the streamlined speed and design 'improvements' are directly related to the removal of iTunes DJ. Especially when you consider that voting and song request gererated a fair amount data management over the network to all participating voting apps. Each one would be receiving fairly live playlist information and iTunes would constantly monitoring for vote tally. Now with iTunes 11 'up-next' playlist allowing for the inclusion of ANY shared library (not just homeshare), Apple may have felt up-next across a network of libraries was more important that social DJ functions.

I'm just guessing, but that may be some technical reasoning for such a profound change. I like some of the potential i see in 11, but 10 is rock solid for me and I don't care to be forced in to an upgrade for the sake of new device that I do not yet own. ...... and I'm not sure there will be a new one now.

I think that's one of the very first things I did when I downloaded "11."

If DJ was there, I think I'd've seen it, as I was looking for my playlists and found them and the Store..

DJ isn't there, hence the return to 10.7

As far as I can tell there has been no luck trying to bring this frustrating issue up to apple, that is the reason the Facebook page has been created in an attempt to show apple it's a issue many people agree on.

And I see you understand the benefits that iTunes DJ had during event playback with guests.

Very very well.... Sucky having to work around it. I feel your pain.

I've gone ahead and reverted to iTunes 10.7.  It isn't too hard since I had all the pieces as outlined by this excellent procedure by these guys at http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/73191/how-can-i-downgrade-itunes-11-to- 10-7-in-mountain-lion

I had to move a lot of big movie files off my mac to get this done.  That's a whole other story.  But I have time machine, and was ultamately able to follow all these steps.

So, I got the DJ back and am listening to it now.  But this is making me re-think this whole eco-structure.

    Cheers,

I admit that after rolling back to 10.7 that I miss some of the overdue functionality added in 11 with "Up Next", as well as the improved aesthetics...

BUT, NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS I MISSED THE KEY DJ FUNCTIONALITIES REMOVED IN 11.

I really do not understand why they didn't just add the additional functionalites of Up Next to DJ.  I badly hope they will add the DJ functionalities missing from 11 back in soon. Without DJ, iTunes 11 was a daily frustration and irritation, and I VERY MUCH prefer being back on v10.7, but I would much like to be able to be current and up to date and have the essential features (e.g. DJ). Please listen Apple!

I don't see any added functinoality.  The GUI isn't great and isn't user friendly, to me it looks like something that a 4 or 5 year old child would like... I am not a 4 or 5 year old child and I don't like the GUI at all.   Looks like tablet and if I wanted a tablet, I would go buy one   Two other functions are gone in 11:   Multiple windows -- i.e. the ability to run your current play list in a seperate window and Clover Flow.   All features that I use everyday.   There gone in 11.   I thought that a major upgrade meant added features -- none were added  they were taken away.  Apple please give us back the functionality that existed before.

There are several DJ type apps for the Android phones and tablets.

The only reason I stick to iTunes is because of my iPod   Apple still had the market when it comes to MP3 players especial those that can hold lots of tunes like 80 and 160 gig iPod Classics.  I have currently have over a terabyte of music and grows everyday and iTunes works the best with the iPod for sync purposes.

I've been using iTunes since it was called Sound Jam in the late 90s. Apple bought sound jam. I to had to roll back to 10.7 because of the removal of iTunes DJ. I've been using macs for 22 years, but I prefer Android. I have a Nexus S and prefer the Pure Android OS to my iPhone 4 running OS6. I have both phones because I'm a developer.

To sync iTunes with my Android I use iSyncr. It works perfect and does it over WiFi. And I use Rocket Player to play my music. All playcounts and playlist and podcast play positions are syncronizes perfectly between my Nexus and iTunes. My Nexus S works just like an iPod.

    Enjoy : )
