Deleting songs in iTunes 11

ITunes 11 updated my library and rechecked the songs I had unchecked. When I went to delete some songs, it wouldn't let me. I couldn't delete playlists or folders either. What gives?

Hi Linda. It looks like this is driving you up the wall. You have my sympathy. This works for me:

1. Highlight the song you want to delete (either in songs, albums, Artists, Genres, Playlists)

2. press and hold ther arrow key (usually above the ctrl key). A + sign in a circle appears to the left of the song

3. While holding this key down, press the delete key on your key board.

This can be used to delete individual songs and playylist.

Really hope this does it for you

Hi Alan...

Thanks for your response. Does "arrow key" refer to the computer keyboard? Above my control key on my Mac keyboard, I have the shift key. Holding down the shift key while selectng a track does not act as you specified. I have the typical up/down/right/left arrow keys, but they don't act as you specified. I couldn't identify any other arrow keys.

Okay, hello all .... This was my orginal post, can believe how many people have looked at it. But here are some Clarifing answers I have.

First, this is for MAC only, I have no idea how to use Itunes on Windows ..... that being said all of the keys and command given are for Mac's .....

Linda, I am not sure want the "arrow " key is .... but if you click on (highlight) a song in a playlist and hold down the "control" button while click the "delete" button it will ask one of 2 things ..... "do you want to remove this song from the playlist or/and (after) "would you like to move this song to the trash" (or something amongst that wording). So the first one is easy if you are just trying to remove it from a playlist; the second might be what you are looking to do like I was .... I wanted a song or album completly removed! .... so you can use the search bar in the top right corner; search anyway needed ... once found you can then either highlight it right there in the drop down menu and hit delete which show ask one of those questions again; or you can click on it and go to it directly select all the tracks and hold "control" while pushing delete; or holding the "control" key down (which acts like a right click on windows computers) and clicking your track pad or mouse (which acts like a right click on windows computers) scroll down to delete, or clicking "edit" in the top menu bar scrolling down and clicking delete.

*Now I really do not like the search bar and the drop down menu .... just think it is way to involved and should just be a simple seach! ..... but my menu drops down with a search field in all categories that the search finds. So if you are trying to completely delete a song and you click on the "playlist" or ther search field where the track is not actually stored ... it will not be deleted! (key here is the question asked by itune; remove from playlist or move to trash) Moving to trash is an actual delete!

* Also this might help you Linda, goto your "View" tab at the top and change your view, I like mine to look like the old style ... so I take off Column Browers, and click on Sidebar. This might be the issue you are having do to not really seeing the track the way you had previously load them. With this new Itunes update, apple was trying to make it more user friendly and APP-Like ... but for any of us that had alll our music on there before (from CD's) the new itunes just put them where ever and filed them according to the "New" user interface results .... which really had me mad for weeks, because I could not find what I was looking for!

That is all I have for now .... have fun, because we all know apple will change it soon! LOL

Highlight the song, press Option + Delete.

Worked for me.

That's what frustrates me about Apple sometimes, completely lacks intuition. Who would think to click Option + Delete to do such a simple task as delete a song from your playlist??? Why not simply delete or a Delete option under Edit in the Menu bar?? Or "Control + Delete"? Or dragging them to the trash bin?? Tried all these first to no avail so ended up here. Get your act together Apple, you do so many other things so well!
