I'm also new and just starting to look at my photos. At the moment the whole collection (masses) are neatly filed in folders by day and by year in 'Pictures'.

If I import them into iPhoto will I be duplicating them? In other words will I now have two versions in different places within the 'pictures' folder?

I agree with BD that GraphicConverter is amazing and well worth its price. However, iPhoto is fine and you should at least start with it.

When you import to iPhoto, it will do nothing to your original photos: They will not be deleted, moved, or modified. iPhoto will create its own iPhoto Library which will appear to the Finder (and thus to you) as a single file but is actually a bundle of all your photos. If you have a very large number of photos (tens of thousands) and are short on storage space, maybe you have cause to be concerned; but most likely not, a hundred gigabytes or even more isn't going to fill up a new Mac's drive.
