My "upgrade" appeared to come disguised as a camera software update - I certainly didn't authorise an iTunes update. But to be fair, if I had seen an iTunes update I would have installed it anyway since all previous updates have been - by and large - improvements.

The question is, why does Apple want to force this "upgrade" so stealthily? I did notice that one of the changes is that it no longer appears to be possible to play songs from a connected iPod, but I may be wrong on that. If I'm not, what else have they restricted?

Almost nothing is right with the new version - almost everything that didn't need changing has been changed, lots of good stuff has gone, and a lot of new stuff has been added that I don't want and seems to be hard or impossible to get rid of.

What is wrong at Apple now? This is the second "update" in a few months where I have to consider reverting to the old version as the only way to fix it.

iTunes 11 upgrade to 10.7

A collection of hints mashed together that enabled me to restore iTunes 10.7 with everything working as before.

Download iTunes 10.7http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 (look for download button on right side of page)

Via iTunes store>account drop down de-authorise computer you installed iTunes 11 on.

Delete iTunes 11 via Terminal ($ is the command prompt don't type in $ only what follows)

Close iTunes and iTunes Helper (might not be running but still go ahead)

$ killall iTunes

$ killall "iTunes Helper"

Switch to an admin account in terminal

$ su ADMIN_NAME

enter password

Be careful type the file path exactly as shown

$ sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/

enter password

$ exit

close terminal

Install iTunes 10.7

- start pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com) and drag "install itunes" to it

- select install itunes.pkg and click install in toolbar

- press replace when asked if "duplicate, update, do nothing or erase" and don't ask again

Restore old iTunes library

IMPORTANT After installation option-click launch (HOLD DOWN OPTION KEY when you launch iTunes) iTunes 10.7. it will then ask you to choose library navigate to Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries and select your last (most recent) iTunes.itl file.

iTunes asks to restore devices to factory default or remove purchases (delete iTunesCDB)

I did as you said and was able to rescue my library, however, iTunes keeps telling me to connect all my iPhones and iPads and restore them to factory default.

I found a solution to this, you have to delete a file called iTunesCDB off the device (no you don't need to be jailbroken to be able to do this). I used ifunbox app based on a post I found that recommended it. After I deleted that file, iTunes 10.7 was able to see my iPad again.

http://www.i-funbox.com (Windows and Mac)

if you use ifunbox, it is under "raw filesystem" /iTunes_Control/iTunes/ and the file name is "iTunesCDB"

Hi PizzaCake,

I downgraded 11 to 10.7 by removing 11 an reinstalling downloaded 10.7.

I also had to use i-funbox to delete old iTunesCDB

When I start iTunes it says "Unknown error occured: (-42480)

It results that I can no longer connect to Appstore, because My computer in no longer Authorized,

and cannot Authorize again.

Is there any resolution to this problem?

Hi,

That error occurs because when you installed the older version of iTunes 10.7 important system files that were updated by iTunes 11 were not reverted back to 10.7 versions. That's why you need to use pacifist to install. Follow my post above and open the 10.7 installer package in pacifist. When it is installing always choose REPLACE files.

As far as authorising your computer it's probably because of the mix of iTunes system files. I re-authorised my computer and everything works perfectly.

If all else fails you can always install iTunes 11 :(

Carefully read my post above and if there is anything specific you're unsure about let me know. Good luck.

iTunes (and Apple in general, these days) has been EXTREMELY annoying in the way they demand you use their software to get the most "benefits."

Excuse me very much... I'll store my songs where * I * want them, play music the way * I * want to. If I wanted Nanny Bloomberg to run my computer, I'd hire him.

The new iTunes offers no improvement whatsoever as far as I'm concerned, and just continues down the path of overbloated annoyware.

Anyone notice you can't just click on the top of the window anymore to make the iTunes window disappear? Maybe there's a setting buried somewhere in preferences. I don't care to waste an hour or so finding it.

The way I use iTunes is VERY simple. Click on songs. Listen. Want a different song? Click on THAT. Listen.

Now, everything I've ever listened to is "Up next" and if I click on a song, a friggin' WARNING message comes up asking me if I'm SURE I want to "clear songs". Seemingly no way to get rid of this annoying new "feature" either.

Intolerable.

The only thing they didn't do (and I shouldn't mention this because they'll take me up on it) is to start automatically playing the last song I played yesterday because they figured, naturally, I'd want to continue from where I left off.

Thanks for posting the 10-minute "fix". I hope it works, since the sooner this "upgrade" is off my computer the happier I'll be. :-<

Update...

The fix worked fine. The only snag I hit is that in terminal it wouldn't accept my admin password. Eventually I figured out this was because I was already "signed in" as the administrator, and continued on without that step without a problem.

Thanks again for posting those instructions. Unfortunately, we'll probably have to do it all again sometime in the future when an upcoming operating system forces the "new and improved" iTunes on us, whether we like it or not.
