You can create ringtones from an audio file imported into iTunes. What type of files are you trying to convert? There are apps in the App Store that will give you step by step instructions.

I have music in my playlist that I downloaded from iTunes and I want to make it my ringtone.

Search the App Store for ringtone apps. Find an app that will walk you through the process. You can also go to the following link to get the instructions.
