I cannot remove my windows partition. I've used Boot Camp in normal and safe mode. I installed the partition in OS Leopard, and since then upgraded through Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion.

How are you trying to remove the Boot Camp partition? and what exactly is the error message.
Boot Camp - the screen only gives the option to remove Windows7 (I installed XP way back when!) and return to a single partition. When I click remove the system runs (over 14 hours) and nothing happens. I then shut Boot Camp down & retried in "safe boot" mode - same again
If you don't have a current backup make one now.
Boot from the original Leopard disc and use the copy of Boot Camp it came with to remove the partition.
I am having exactly the same problem...go to remove windows partition and "restore" to a single OSX partitionm and the boot camp assistant sits there for hours on end without making any progress.
Question for Csound1:
1) What are the steps to boot from the leopard disc and use the copy of boot camp it came with to remove the partition?
2) I currently have mountain lion. And I have everything backed up to time machine. Will doing this require me to remove my OSX volume as well? Will it affect my osx volume at all? What about the fact that the disc that came with my mac (iMac 2009) is not the same version of OSX I have now?

My mac came with Snow Leopard. And yes, I do have a current backup.
Then boot from the disk, open Boot Camp Assistant and try to remove the Windows partition.
When I try to boot from Leopard - it will only let me install the OS.
Boot Camp is not available unless a complete install is done. (it would have been brilliant if it was in the disk utility etc available pre-install)
I've resigned myself to erasing the Windows disk and reformatting the partition tp Mac journal extended then renamed it to use as a store disk (to backup important files/folders.

I am having the same issues as the OP. Installd XP on Leopard, and since upgraded to Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. Now, I cant use my VM since it's a PPC app, and I want to regain the 30GB alloted to it. The removal just spins and spins for hours, doing nothing.

I finally got it to work! Persistence is the answer. When the removal would just keep on going and seemingly do nothing, I would just quit the bootcamp assistant and then start the process again. Finally after about 10-15 tries, it just worked!

Yup, sometimes keep trying is all it takes.
I am glad to hear it worked for you. When it did work, how long did it take? Just wondering at what point I should kill the process and restart it.

Kill the process when you get an error mesage, leave it alone until you do.
If you do not have a current backup, stop now and make one
I actually never got an error message when I was trying it. The first time I tried, I let it sit overnight and it was the same the next morning...no change. I can't remember exactly, but once it worked for me, it didn't take long at all. Maybe 10-15 minutes??
I didn't need to restore anything from a backup as everything went pretty well once started, but I can see the potential for things going wrong, so DEFINITELY make a backup before you keep trying.
Hopefully it works for everyone who's having this issue!

A VM is just a file, delete it.
